Chatty things

I'd almost forgotten LJ was a place for chatty things. Lo, I have become a terse and withdrawn hermit crab. So here's some of the fun things that happened today:

(much later)

OK, I can't think of anything fun. You see? You see how depressing my life is? Send lipgloss and iPods I should stop making that joke because it ceased to be funny about ( Read more... )

An eligible kid? Does that mean you have to have a strange, half-orangutan child to apply, so they pay you to keep it? ;)

Well, a lot of countries lack a good migrant representation and care diddly squat if the migrants in question are adapting or not. It's a sad truth but one that IMO should be taken into account before you move. I do know that some embassies here give their representatives care-packages and goodies and maps whatnot. Maybe it's the same in Aus?

We have no circuses because people stopped selling their children. :(

Most countries lack good migration response. The developed world has started to put some things in place because they realised that poor integration was feeding into divided societies and disassociated groups, particularly the youth.

Pity about the circuses. I like a good ole fashioned freak show every now and again... And here we could chortle about that midget fic once more :) .

Developed world, you say? What is this thing you speak of? Heh, I imagine some of the more socialist-inclined countries in the EU have some sort of migration policy, but AFAIK supposedly first world countries like the US don't really give a shit, unless you're high up in the international politics chain.

Heh, midget fic. I am unceasingly amused by how often you reference it!

Hmm, perhaps it is different in the Commonwealth. A lot of the migration policies in Australia is intended to bolster the economy - we have an aging population and not enough babies popping out. India doesn't have a migration policy because who'd want to migrate to India unless their own country was imploding? The UK's migration policies are pretty heavy-handed now but they're full of refugees from parts of the Empire and other craziness. The US...well, you're right. I think you only get into the US if you're going to be useful or if you make it across the borders without being caught.

The UK is dealing with some intense xenophobia at the moment, particularly with the odd success of the British National Party that occasionally distracts me from the abiding shame I feel regarding my own country's policies and procedures (we're even pissing off the Canadians lately. Apparently, you cannot be admitted to the U.S. as a legal immigrant if you have HIV/AIDS and the government can deport non-citizens with the disease who are already living here. Because that's not discriminatory at all.

Um...I'm not necessarily against that. Inviting people who will potentially need very expensive medical treatment or inviting people who will not be able to afford said medical treatment, and then who could be the subject of a very damning documentary stating that the government lets them in but then just lets them die, could push everyone's buttons as well.

Plus, people will be worried about infection. <-- Not my opinion.

See, your reasoning isn't bad, but that's certainly not the logic being used by the CDC and INS. We don't have socialized medicine and non-citizen immigrants are usually not eligible for health care by state or federal government programs that are in place. In fact, it's controversial, but hospitals can fly illegal immigrants out of the country rather than treat them.

The reasoning was based more on worries about infection, it's on a list with things like tuberculosis.
