"What's your style?"

.

I was interviewing a top architect/interior designer and found myself asking him what his style was. I hate that question. Everytime a reporter asks me that about my house or my clothes I think they're just being lazy. Then I hear the architect/designer talk behind my back. He said "I hate when people ask me what my style is. There is no style. I just go with my feeling."

Okay Mister. I know exactly what you mean. But I need some answers. We're on TV.

I've resorted to - "What did you want to achieve when designing this room?"

I also don't like being asked that same question. But I live in a sound byte-driven world. And I must give my ready answers, the cliches. My clothing? I just say I love wearing dresses because then I don't have to think. I lean towards construction rather than deconstruction (except for Eairth). I prefer the classic over the trendy. Yadda yadda. But for our house, I can never give a ready-answer about what style our house is. It is a bahay-na-bato-styled forty-year old suburban house that feels like a cottage. One thing it's not.. eclectic. I cringe when I hear that word. It's such a cop out. Don't know how to describe something? Call it eclectic.

Our house is everything but eclectic. It actually has one singular look. Everything we have is Filipino antique. I just gave them new life by painting my walls different colours. We don't have a mix of different cultures -- no buddha heads, no african masks, no wildly modern designer chairs. It's just all Pinoy. It is old, shabby, rickety but very comfy and charming.

The people at Summit Media sent me a complimentary copy of Real Home Ideas 3. It's an annual "book" that the editors at Real Living magazine put together. Apparently my house is featured in it. I wished they had told me before doing it. I would have given my permission anyway. But I could have also supported them with extra publicity in my show. These photos were taken a couple of years ago. Everything has changed since. We've renovated the bedrooms.

The book is soooo worth it. There are three volumes now. They're all very pretty and user-friendly.

Just one thing. Our house is filed under "Eclectic." Oh no....

Seriously, it's all good. Thanks Real Living!!!
