so, have you guys discovered Swoopo.
It's an auction site for stuff, new stuff. Some pretty cool new stuff, like laptops, digital cameras and shit. And whoever thought of it, hell, they are fucking genius. Here, let me tell you why.
Okay, free to sign up.. but before you can buy anything, you need to purchase 'bids' to use. Okay, that's cool. Bids are .75 cents each. And sold in packages of 50, 75, 100, 300, etc....
Now, the clock is ticking down.. things usually start getting exciting in the last 10 minutes.. a lot of these auctions are 'penny auctions', so each bid raises the price a penny at a time. As people bid on the item, it adds a few more seconds on the auction. Which gets real exciting when it reaches 10 secs to go and suddenly 10 people bid, and you have 10 minutes again.. and this can go on for hours.. so imagine how quickly you can use up your bids and still not win the item you are after. Now the winner is happy because they have likely paid only a fraction of the price otherwise plus how much they actually invested in 'bids' they purchased.
Now here is the part that is genius.
Canon SLR Ditital Rebel package, say, is 900 dollars normally. Penny auction, sells for say 40.00 ... the website owners made 3000.00 dollars just off of the 'bid' purchases of the folks competting to win.. plus the 40 dollars of the final price. They can't really lose anything for selling it at a fraction, because you got plenty of people competting against one another for hours on end trying to be the final winner, which only happens when someone doesn't push bid one more time in the last ten seconds and the clock finally runs out.
