TVD 4x03: "How about we just leave the murdering to Damon?"

Oct 29, 2012 03:29

I don't have anything particularly intelligent to say about this episode, tbh. It was pretty straightforward. It had its high points. But largely, it was an episode of TVD, which means crazy plot shenanigans and excessive bloodshed and pretty men taking their shirts off and then more ridiculous plot stuff. Aka the best show on television, yes?

So ( Read more... )

a filter what is it?, tvd, the vampire diaries, episode reaction post!, sometimes i do things i don't have to do

So it seems Elena hates Rebekah. In two years they'll be making out on a motel balcony. You heard it here first.
LOL OMG when Elena was like "I didn't think I was capable of hate!", I was just like - LOL BUT REMEMBER THAT WHOLE SEASON WHERE YOU WERE DECLARING YOUR PASSIONATE HATRED FOR THAT DUDE YOU LIKE TO DRY HUMP ON BALCONIES / IN BATHROOMS NOW AND THEN? REMEMBER???????!!!!

Where was their so-called wonderful friendship when Stefan was going off the rails and Caroline's father was torturing her and then dying and everything was going to hell?
Word. Everything you say is truth. I want to like them, so much, I DO, but I just can't take it seriously. Especially when their interactions here consisted of "you're the gr8est"/"no, you're the gr8est!!!" Painful, tbh. (And yeah, let's not start with Caroline's hero-worship. Stefan just needs to be lit on fire at this point.)

Same thing with "Too Close" by Alex Clare (and fuck you for putting it to an S/E makeout, even with a hilarious Damon hallucination cockblock).
Haha, but that's a good break-up song? ;P

So the show suddenly pretending that Rebekah has a legitimate interest in Matt because he's Matt? No. Sorry. No. And I'm not saying that to be harsh to Matt. That's just not what this relationship has ever been about, and I don't want the show to abruptly decide to try and make this a real romance.
Okay wait, I can actually make sense of this. The thing is, I think Rebekah has become interested in Matt because he's the opposite of Klaus. Or something. IDK. After getting kicked out by Klaus (= the love of her life), she's completely alone and left to stew in her regret. So, she DOES feel bad about trying to murder Matt, and I think she thinks that if Matt grows to forgive her and accept her as she is, then that will redeem her of her mistake of choosing Klaus above everything. I mean, she was on the road that night because of Klaus. So… yeah, if I read Matt/Rebekah as her rebounding, then I can deal, lol.

I love that Damon says things like "perish the thought." You are a secret nerd, Damon.
SAME. I will always treasure the moment in some random episode where he said "this is a most unfortunate event!" Death.

But question: is it really that big of a deal if Tyler DID sleep with Hayley? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but were Tyler and Caroline even 100% together when Tyler left? Meh, maybe they were. Maybe I'm thinking of that time he buggered off in season 2 (he seems to disappear into the ether at least once every season).
LOL, this. But also yeah, I'm pretty sure that when Tyler fucked off last season he and Caroline were not really an ~item. Because he almost killed her and all that. I mean, there was no official breakup, but I kinda think there's some leeway here? IDK.

Oooh, The Five, how mysterious. Just kidding, I don't care. Take your shirt off again, Damon.
This is the best line.

If the show is trying to go in some sort of direction in which Damon corrupts her and inspires Elena to embrace her evil side until she realizes that she needs Stefan to help her hold on to her humanity?
UGH STAB STAB STAB STAB STAB. Though, the worst part is how people ALREADY think this. Despite there being zilch evidence of this in the text. And also, shut up, your coded misogyny reeks from a mile away. Then again, as Marta said, the show hasn't really been presenting this. So I'm not as worried as I could be.

Klaus saves Elena, and I enjoy it. Klaus/Elena, y/y?
Y.

WHO WANTS TO CHECK INTO THE DAMON SALVATORE WING? A show of hands, please.
WHAT. IS THIS ACTUALLY A THING THAT IS HAPPENING. HOW. WHAT. HOW. WHAT IS THIS SHOW. (NEXT SEASON: MAYORHOOD????)

I hate when shows recycle clearly well-beloved lines in a way that isn't particularly well done. It happens in this case with the "insecure control freak" line. We all loved that line in season 2, but in this case, it just feels kind of...I don't know, lazy? Like the show is trying to buddy up to us with this fandom favourite line and thereby capitalize on our fond feelings or whatever?
Yep. See, this is why you need to write recaps, so you can spew all my disdain for me!

I really think that Damon decides in this exact moment that he's going to help her.
Yeah, this. And the way Ian played the scene suggested this, too. Damon just got a really resolved face all of a sudden towards the end of the scene. NGL, "I'm gonna teach you" makes me roll my eyes a bit, but I'm actually looking forward to seeing Damon try to help Elena with all of the best intentions… and for it to go wrong anyway? Not because he's an evil corruptive influence, but because he's too emotionally compromised. We've discussed this.

Lol, plot. Sure.
How do you articulate my feelings about everything so succinctly.

And OMG, GUYS! This recap is only 4,608 words! How blissfully short! I am proud.
I am proud of you, child. You have come far. Now go watch that scene where Damon takes off his shirt like 23 times as a reward.

I think I've been guilty of this too, in a sense. I've been getting on my Fandom Crusader Steed ready to ride into battle over something that hasn't even happened yet. I'm just so wary of the way fandom COULD react that I'm getting ahead of myself. But as I told Marta, I should just stop my premature fandom rage campaign and give the show the benefit of the doubt, because if this show has earned anything, it's the benefit of the doubt where D/E is concerned. So I will do my best to halt my spiraling. Stand by for further fandom freakouts (hey, alliteration!) after tonight's episode, however.

NEXT SEASON: MAYORHOOD????

I would be 0% surprised, tbh.

See, this is why you need to write recaps, so you can spew all my disdain for me!

One of the better compliments I've received of late. :D

That's precisely where I got my reading. He played it like that, so I'm taking it like that.

Now go watch that scene where Damon takes off his shirt like 23 times as a reward.

Done.

YEAH. THAT. Oh, Elena, you glorious fool.

I want to like them, so much, I DO, but I just can't take it seriously. Especially when their interactions here consisted of "you're the gr8est"/"no, you're the gr8est!!!" Painful, tbh.

Ugh, EXACTLY this. I loved them SO much in season 2, but the whole thing just feels so cheapened now, and I resent the show trying to take shortcuts with them. I'm sure I could get back to how I felt about them if the show would take the time to address the huge gaps in their relationship timeline, but if it's going to skip over all that then how am I supposed to feel for them what I once did? But it seems you and I are the only people with this problem, Alex, which is just making me feel extra forlorn and *foreveralone*. Le sigh.

So, she DOES feel bad about trying to murder Matt, and I think she thinks that if Matt grows to forgive her and accept her as she is, then that will redeem her of her mistake of choosing Klaus above everything...if I read Matt/Rebekah as her rebounding, then I can deal

Ok, yes, I buy this completely. I think perhaps I was too strident in my criticism of Matt/Rebekah in this recap. I DO see how Rebekah can be into him, but I just wish the show would be more overt about how it started. I still think that Rebekah's interest in Matt stemmed entirely from her idea of Matt as a concept. He probably did manage to get under her skin in his own right, because Matt is a nice guy and Rebekah is susceptible to that. I just think that Matt/Rebekah is so much more about who Rebekah is than it is a genuine love story. I'm not saying that Matt isn't worthy of someone loving him in his own right - I'm just not sure if that someone is Rebekah. Or maybe I'm just too REBEKLAUS OTP 4EVER. It could also be that. ;)

I will always treasure the moment in some random episode where he said "this is a most unfortunate event!" Death.

OMG WHEN DID HE SAY THIS??? Perfection.

I mean, there was no official breakup, but I kinda think there's some leeway here?

This. I mean, I think it's totally legitimate for Caroline to be a bit put out by Hayley's presence and her past with Tyler and all that. But I just don't quite see how this could make or break them as a couple? In my mind, it's the equivalent of an ex coming to town. Irksome, but not catastrophic.

LOL I think it was early S2 when Liz found out about them being vampires and then kidnapped them, and then Caroline had to kill the guards to rescue them?
