He had actually managed to some of that long put-off Chemistry homework done tonight. Tuesday nights had unofficially become a time of productivity; both Sindre and Kai were at work, and it was too early to look forward to the weekend, but not early enough to pretend his education wasn't a pressing commitment.

He'd been right in the middle of it when his phone started vibrating and Kai's name popped up, causing Valdi to do a double take. Wasn't he meant to be at work?
Hesitating with confusion, he brought the phone up to his ear.

Aaannnddd suddenly the papers in front of him were much, much less important.
"Hey, what's up? Did Sindre let you off early?"

"Valdi?" He ushered out, neglecting to even hear the sentence uttered to him. His voice was muffled, tinged with a brimming panic as well as the pain of regret. He swore to himself that he wouldn't cry; it was a promise he'd work very hard to keep this time around. "V-Valdi, I.."

Kai's thoughts were a jumbled mess, and they were relayed in such a manner when he tried to explain what happened. "Just.. oh God there was a fire, the store was on fire, and Sindre got stuck under a bookshelf and got hurt and,, I-I know he's safe, I know he's here somewhere, I don't know where though 'cause they won't let me go see him yet--"

His lack of breath started to catch up with the ramble of his thoughts, turning his head to cough harshly off to the side and not into the receiver. His throat stung terribly but he continued in a pinched voice, breathing uneasy. "Polish guy and Willem were there too, I don't know where they are either, maybe with Sindre, and-- We're at the hospital. Some hospital, is there more than one? I don't really know

At the sound of the other floundering he switched his means of communication, sliding into Danish if it would make anything easier for the other man. "I'm fine, I'm fine, my lungs hurt but I'm fine," Kai breezily murmured, then hesitated, taking a glance around to make sure a nurse wasn't approaching his station. "Worry about finding Sindre; they just want to keep me here until my breathing is better, was a lot of smoke, breathed in a whole bunch and my lungs ain't so good anyway, so.."

He felt terrible telling Valdi all of this, but the weight of the situation was better levered by himself than some unfeeling nurse or doctor, he figured. "Whatever is the biggest hospital-- Sindre's there. Just worry about finding him. I'm fine."

"I worry about you," He sighed in the same tongue, pausing in his hurried departure to flip the laptop open and quickly google the quickest route to Liberty's largest hospital. A 20 minute wait until the next bus, and another 20 minutes transport, pending traffic.

At least Sindre would be looked after at the hospital and- he hoped- resting.
"Do you mind if you stay on the phone for a bit? It'll take me about 40 minutes to get there, and even if its not for that long, I would feel a lot better."

"\I worry about you too. I didn't want you to hear like this, but I also didn't want some fuckin' doctor to tell you like a frigid ice princess," Kai relayed to him. "But they may call you soon. Sindre probably has you listed as an emergency contact, which--"

Which meant if they had a handle on his phone at any time earlier, the hospital probably just levied a quite pricey call to Denmark. Which meant that he'd be hearing all about this in both male and female chorus in the next couple days. He sighed inwardly as a drained look washed over his face. It was honestly the last thing he needed to hear from mom right now, and he didn't want to be the one to break the news to Søren.

"I'll stay on the line as long as I can. I don't know if I'm supposed to be on the phone here-- I'm still in the emergency room," He replied. "Then again I've never been one much for rules and etiquette so quite honestly they can kiss my ass."

Despite the situation, Valdi managed a laugh on the other end. There was something endearing about Kai's persistent defiance; strong until the end- or at least as far as the Emergency room, which was much further than Valdi would ever wish to test it.

To him, it was a sign that the Dane would be okay. Because if he had the strength to backsass society, he had the strength to look after himself.

"It would have been that, or a late night text from Sindre. 'Not coming home tonight.'" Valdi smiled inwardly, but it was a melancholic smile. Sindre would probably want him to not worry, and brush it off like he had every other injury.

But they'd promised to be honest now, hadn't they?

"I will be there as soon as I find him. Heh...try not to get into a fight with the staff, alright?"

"Yeah, that sounds about right. Sindre is the master of not enough information when it comes to something so vital," Kai mused with a hint of a foreign smile, reflecting the same unseen melancholy that Valdi held. "But.. He'll be okay. He's Sindre, after all."

"And I can be good. I won't punch anyone, or throw up down the front of a Doctor's jacket," He replied with a hoarse laugh, coupled soon after by cough. "Just.. don't work yourself up into a panic. Find Sindre and stay with him. I'll come find you."

"I'm gonna hold you to that." He'd made it to the Charleston Lobby, and a quick glance at the wall clock told him he'd either have to run or wait around for another bus.

"Uhh..I have to run. I'll talk to you later, okay? ...Please try to make it." Please look after yourself

His eyes slipped closed as he answered next with a tired sigh. "Be safe. I'll be around as soon as I can get around," Kai murmured, a hand lifting to rub at his throat in an unconscious gestures. For hesitated a second before hanging up, words on the tip of his tongue that he wanted to say and with all the fear in the world felt paralyzed against them.

Jeg elsker dig.

He held out, though, not wanting to scare the other man even more when his world had already been made topsy turvy. "Please be safe," Kai instead ended their conversation with before killing the connection, his arm falling flush with the mattress as strength left him.
