Saturday night, I went to the AX Staff Appreciation Dinner. I shouldn't have gone. It was an exercize in frustration. There is something wrong when an organization applauds pissing off its customers.
Exhibit Hall Lynn got All-Staff MVP for contributing most to the convention. She's also one of the people I would replace for bald-faced lying. They congratulated her for a sold-out Exhibit Hall. If you actually paid attention at the convention, the hall wasn't sold out. There was a huge corner blocked off with curtains. She didn't as sell out as much as she moved the curtains closer to the front. By this definition, anybody could sell out with minimal effort.
Alice Wang got MVP in her department. They said she was a registration staffer for the first time a couple years ago. And if my suspicions are correct. She's also the one who went into the registration system and messed with a friend's badge to have it print out a profane nickname. For her actions, she was still able to go to AX2004, since they didn't sus her out until afterward. She was only "fired" from staff for one year and returned for 2006. I would have blacklisted her from the con permanantly. Personally, I think she misused her position of power and trust and was malicious against a convention attendee. That puts her on my shitlist. If it's not the same person, then I'll take her off.
Kenji got MVP for being "the most hated man in cosplay" (direct quote on the intro) and then everybody laughed about it. Except me. If he's the most hated man in cosplay, shouldn't there be some concern as to why? Plus he started Masquerade early this year, which is very, very bad.
Chase got some huge ass honor from all the div heads and whatnot. They think he's the greatest thing since sliced bread. I think he has done an adequate job. And as a press professional with background in public relations, I find his press releases mediocre and cliched. Chase was awarded with some Dolce and Gabana Motorola Razor or someshit.
This display of maliciousness has me frustrated. I wanted back on AX staff because I thought it might be better to work on the inside to being the fun back into the convention. But there's a different aire now and I don't think anything will get it out. I did submit an application for BoD, Convention Chair or Exhibits Div head last week. If I don't get any of those positions, I'm inclined to just stay out. I think my talents would be wasted as a peon staffer, and I just don't know these people anymore. They're just so mean-spirited.
The only good thing
The bar was open at the restaurant. Early on while people were getting seated, I went up and ordered a double shot of Jim Beam whiskey. I was the only one taking advantage of the bar. The Chinese lady asks, "You're lucky I'm here. How much do you want?" "How much can you give me?" *pours whiskey* "Is this double shot?" "Uh, I dunno." Chinese guy goes behind the bar on his way to the back room and says, "Aiya! That's triple!" Chinese lady gives it to me anyway for the price of a double. "I don't want you to get drunk." "Why? Won't I come back and spend more money when I'm drunk?" "You haven't eaten yet." "Oh yeah, well, I'll drink it slow." I like that Chinese lady.
