I was at the hospital visiting my aunt whiles she's recovering from her chemo. We were watching Tv and the ellen degenerate show was on (me neither) Ellen was doing the show outside in front of a crowd and announced that she was giving an audience member a free car and a trip to disney world. She says "This very special prize is going to a single mother who, even though facing tough times, is doing everything she can to be an exceptional mother to her baby son"
they announce the girls name and its something generically awful like "ingrid dunleavy" and then the camera cuts to a 40 year old sand paper tanned woman and this teenage looking white chick jumping up and down and crying happily. I'm thinking "An exceptional job raising her baby son... and teenage daughter who's probably old enough for a part time job now?"
The teenage girl, of course, runs out of the crowd and tearfully hugs ellen. she then begins screaming like there's a swarm of ladybugs in her drawers. everyone claps for her.
"Is your son here today?" ellen asks. The girls says yes, and that she loves him so much for being strong without a father figure and this little toddler makes his way through the crowd and she scoops him up and kisses him.
This baby is BLACK. Not half-rican American. Not mulatto. Not the sensuous color of coffee when it is mixed with milk. Black "That's a nice car, miss lady" black. The kid waves at the cameras. the audience applause becomes noticeably less, um, enthusiastic. Ellen is still doing her whole chirpy lesbian thing.
"You can turn this off now," my aunt says to me. "I'm going to bed."
