So this past week we spoke about Bush and Forster. Bush believes that making things mechanized would be good for us, while Forster believed that machines will be the death of us.
I think there should be a balance of Bush and Forster. Bush, because machines make life easier for us. Forster, because what happens to us if we get too dependent on technology and it fails. I want to say that we should have a sense of balance.
A few years ago, a lot of machines in my house failed for no apparent reason. My laptop's hard drive wore out and I lost all my data, 40 gigs of downloaded songs :-(
Soon afterward someone knocked out our phone-line by accident and then of course there was the black out in New York City. At night my dog wanted to go for walk in the darkness. I hate to admit this, but while I was walking, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was ready to jump out at me from nowhere(my neighborhood is has trees everywhere). This is my neighborhood, I lived here for 13 years and for the first time in my life, I was scared of it. If I was to get mugged or injured, no one would be able to call the police or ambulance.
After all of this over, I became more aware of what was wrong with me, I've become too reliant on technology. That and I was afraid there were street gangs walking around my area.
When we were reading the book for Forster, I was thinking of that day all those years ago. I believe that in a way we are living like the people in "The Machine Stops", or maybe it's just me. What would happen if there was a power outage again? How would you react? Thanks for reading.
