So I got notified today that as of Jan 1, 2011, my company is no longer providing health care for domestic partners of either gender, with exception of course
( Read more... )
I found out that it will be announced company wide at a later date...they just wanted us to know earlier so we can prepare.
Turns out the cause of this is the federal law on covering children until age 26. Since they are not federally required to cover domestic partners and the group was large enough, they decided we were expendable. I guess the budget for benefits is in a silo...can't take money from someplace else in the company...it has to come from the Benefits dept.
Tried to make me feel sorry for the company because when someone uses their insurance, they have to pay. Well, DUH!
Even if they're announcing it later, it still sucks. Especially since if the group is large enough to affect the bottom line, it means it's large enough to be a lot of disgruntled people, especially if the domestic partner doesn't have access to health insurance easily otherwise. I'd think this would make them a less attractive employer in the long run (though I guess in this economy, they don't care).

Do not like.
This was not announced company wide, only to those of us who fit the criteria.
Wow. Wouldn't want to make anyone else uncomfortable now, would they.
