So I got notified today that as of Jan 1, 2011, my company is no longer providing health care for domestic partners of either gender, with exception of course.
Here it is in a nutshell...
"Double digit health care cost increases have continued year over year. Despite continually managing our health care costs, Putnam is not immune to these increases. In an effort to temper these cost increases, and with the objective of keeping health care coverage affordable for our employees, we have re-evaluated our definition of an eligible dependent for purposes of participation in our group health and dental plans. After careful consideration, we will be changing our policy effective January 1, 2011, so that only a married employee may cover his/her spouse for Putnam benefits. We are writing to you because our records indicate that you currently have domestic partner benefits coverage.
Beginning next year, in most cases, domestic partner coverage will no longer be provided. This means that, after December 31, 2010, you must be legally married to continue coverage for your partner in the Putnam group health, dental or personal accident insurance plans. This new policy applies to both same and opposite sex domestic partner relationships. One important exception to this new policy relates to same-sex domestic partners. Same-sex domestic partners can continue coverage in states where same-sex marriages are not legally recognized."
So basically us unmarried people get sacrificed so the married folks can continue to have the same coverage for their spouses at the same cost they have now. To save me money, they're removing the one dependent I have. So kind of them to be concerned about my family's welfare.
This was not announced company wide, only to those of us who fit the criteria. I'm not too keen on being the sacrificial lamb for this. This feels underhanded and unethical...I don't appreciate their social commentary on my marital status especially after having to provide legitimate evidence that my boyfriend is really my live-in-boyfriend and that we support each other.
So filled with rage right now.
