Retort, Hubris, Lasts

So the proposed same-sex marriage ban in Indiana was defeated in committee. 5-5. No majority. No dice. Thanks to corporate America (Eli Lilly, Cummings et all) for lobbying on our behalf. It was no great charity on their behalf though. They were really just looking out for their own best interests. They want to maintain domestic partner benefits so they can recruit the best talent out there just like their rivals in states like Massachusetts, California, New Jersey, Conn and Vermont that offer comparatively gay-friendly environments and substantial legal rights and protections for everyone. Indiana is already at a huge disadvantage in this respect. I see states that take the steps now towards providing fair and equal treatment for same-sex couples taking a commanding economic lead (more jobs, more taxes, better quality of life and so on..) over the more closed-minded and conservative states. One side is extending freedom and liberty to those who have been denied it. The other side is scrambling to write oppression and bigotry into their very constitutions. It is about common sense, something we mid-westerners are supposed to have. I'm glad that big business in Indiana realizes that even if the absurdly backwards majority of the populous doesn't.

I think the gods are punishing us for our hubris. After a couple weeks of 70+ weather and a near record high of 83F yesterday today it was 50F. Damn cold. After starting a nice tan and getting used to flip-flops I'm back to shivering in boots and hoody. It will get colder too. Below freezing the next couple nights. Goodbye flowers, goodbye sunshine, goodbye hot neighbors without shirts on. May the frost be merciful.

I'm about one month away from becoming a university graduate and not much closer to finding new employment. Yarghh.

PINK, the annual U of L charity drag show is this Friday. I have senior colloquium next week. I have the last film in the French film series to watch tomorrow. Lots of lasts coming up. Hopefully some firsts too.
