Not to sound incredibly overly-negative or even condescending, but I've always felt that the bar scene was a very big hinderance on the gay community as a whole. Folks are no longer hiding behind closet doors, but now they're behind bar room doors. It's not in there that we will find equality or better ourselves. The bar is not a place where you can discuss... well, anything except the things that you mentioned. It's a different social order altogether -- and it's, in many ways, removed from reality. Maybe that's why some people prefer it in the first place.
So, yeah, it's all in WHY you're going in there, personally -- which is why I never ever go. I don't see, either, why it's the clubs and bars that make such an appearance at annual pride festivals. What message is it that we're sending, anyway? What is it that we're proud of in those circumstances?
I dunno... when it comes to things like this I guess I'm more of a conservative than a liberal. It's not that I think we should be conforming to some sort of moral standard, but I do think that with all the mud-slinging that our community suffers from the right-wing media (and even non-biased media sources), we should be doing more to show ourselves as an intelligent and diverse people -- people who do have something truly valuable and positive to add to society as a whole. [granted, I'm an idealist]
