The Chicago musical has been back on Prague theater stages since November, this time in much smaller production than the one in the Music Theater Karlin ten years back. I didn´t go to see the previous one because I was in London at the time and the West End production I saw was fresh on my mind and I doubted that the czech production could rival the London one (let´s be honest.)
This new production of Chicago is played in the Palmovka Theater and my dear friend is playing the part of Velma Kelly so of course I had to see it. This theater is quite small and not really ideal for a musical but I got used to the setting. It was a nice small production, I would say. Palmovka theater has mostly a drama ensemble so the actors were mostly actors who can sing but the two leads, Roxie and Velma, are guesting actors with musical training. I thing they all did a great job. The beginning of the show was slower and it took some time for the show(and the actors) to get their footing and once they did it was very enjoyable.
It was great to see my friend singing and dancing again, it reminded me of my „young“ years in Brno when she starred in every musical there and we were in theater every week to see her, total fangirls. She has small kids now and is not acting very often so it was really great to see her after all this time. I´m sure I´m going to see it at least once more and all that jazz.
