All Men Are Created Equal*
I know I promised a happier post this time, but the news stands for no one. Plus, being the political junkie I am, I just can't resist.
Read a story today about a man who slashed the throat of his taxi driver because the driver is a Muslim. This is obviously a little more than disturbing.
So far I have not posted about the "Ground-Zero" Mosque or about the general controversy around all the other proposed Mosques - like this one in Tennessee. However, given the general display of stupidity, I feel it is time to at least state my opinion.
OK, I know we're all hypocrites to some degree. It seems to be human nature that we stand for more than we actually are, and this has always been part of our nation's history. After all, "All men are created equal" was written by a slave-holding gentry that we now know today as Thomas Jefferson.
That said, America, can you take a moment and look and what you're actually saying? Actually doing?
This is the same argument I gave when people told me to buy my firearms now before Obama takes them away. Seriously, no one is going to fuck with the Bill of Rights. No one. Because if you can compromise one of the first ten amendments, including the second, then all are up for forfeit - including the first one. So no is going to fuck with it because no one wants to be responsible for weakening the integrity of our most hallowed document.
That said, when you bully people around and out because of their belief, then you yourself should be ashamed at the disservice you are doing your countrymen. Because you yourself are practicing something that is not American, not patriotic, when you tell people what to believe, or where to believe it. We do have freedom here. And if I want a church built in my community then I have the freedom to pursue that goal. If some other group wants a mosque, synagogue, temple or whatever, then they also have that same freedom.
Either all Americans are unequivocally free, or we still live with some form of tyranny.
