This episode surprised me a lot because it did things I was not anticipating, things that were surprisingly touching. Here we go!
-Y'know, I really love the touch of the CGI Scarecrow popping out from behind the green bubbly pillar thing in the background to watch while the camera is on Dorothy as she fights for his freedom. I don't know why; maybe because it would have been easier to just keep the Scarecrow hidden behind the pillar the whole time but nope, they animated him in for a split-second shot of him spying on his rescue attempt. Hee!
Also, I am afraid of dogs but oh holy wow do I want cute little Toto. Hi Toto!! You and Gracie would get along well, wouldn't you?
And nice nod to the "man behind the curtain" scene in The Wizard of Oz by having Toto pull the curtains down on Zelena.
-Aww, Zelena jumped into a portal that could have been leading to oblivion, for all she knew, after little Pistachio, just like Snow jumped into the portal after Emma. (Also, I am going to call Baby Hood Pistachio from now until I'm told otherwise and maybe even after that. Sorry, Adam and Eddy, you gave us this joke, now we're running with it. ;))
-Belle: "Where are we? And why is the sky red?" Me: Hee!
-Zelena: "Who the hell are you?" Hades: "Who the hell am I? That question is more appropriate than you know." Me: Whee!! Please give me all the hell puns!
-Zelena: "And what does Hades need with a time travel spell?" Hades: "All in good time, Zelena, all in good time." Me: Whee!!
-Can I just say that I love that the Underworld has levels for their hauntings? "It's a simple level one haunting." HA! So if level one is making someone hear your voice from the ether, what's slamming doors? Moving objects? Appearing as mist or shadows??
-So, I love how when Henry was getting touchy after Killian snarked on the mundane "story" he wrote, but Emma and Regina complimented him on how well-written it was and how lovely the illustrations were. Hee!! They're such moms. It's so cute. And I LOVE how when Henry has his teenage snit and stomps upstairs, Robin and Killian are grinning at each other, ridiculously amused by their stepson's teenage snit. HA!
-Zelena: "I don't know the day I was born but thank you for reminding me." Hades: "That's actually a sad story." Zelena: "I only the know the day my mother abandoned me." Me: Aww. That actually is really sad. I wonder if she celebrated birthdays as she was growing up and if so, how that day was chosen.
-Hades: "Only the kiss of True Love can restart my heart and allow me to return a fully formed man, free of this curse." Me: Hello, Foreshadowing, nice to make your acquaintance.
-Okay, I like that Rumple laid all his cards on the table for Belle. He told her about the contract and he told her about being the Dark One again. And I like that she was disgusted and she didn't fall for his crap.
My whole issue with Rumbelle is the power imbalance, the deceit, and the dishonesty. I personally hope that Belle keeps her distance and finally puts him behind her (because, imo, she has so much more to offer and deserves so much better than playing second fiddle to a man who will never love her as much as he loves the care and keeping of his power and as such has done terrible things to other people and to her) but if she doesn't, at least this time it'll be her fully informed choice.
All that being said, after this scene where Belle learns that she's pregnant with a baby who's already been sold and that her husband is once again the Dark one, poor Belle needs a drink or an ice cream sundae or both.
-Okay, Robin, I appreciate that you want to get to know little Pistachio before you name her but you do realize it's going to take a few months for her personality to start emerging, yes? I mean, you can't go around calling her "baby" for the next nine months. She needs a name (that's not Pistachio, haha). If you want my opinion? Go for Marianne. That way you can honor Marian while still giving Pistachio a name to make her own.
-Y'know, when they teased the whole Hades and Zelena love affair at the end of last week's episode, I fully expected it to be campy. To my surprise and delight, it ended up being really sweet. I've always been interested in the idea of a Dark True Love and it seems right now like we're getting it and I'm loving it. I feel kinda conflicted because like, I'm supposed to love to hate these characters, not think they're cute.
-Emma and Killian sitting together on the little loveseat in the loft made me aww. I love how they're physically so close in this episode because I now have this headcanon that the two of them can't stand to be separated from each other now that they're together again and it's making me feel things, haha. And Snow's desperation at just wanting to let Neal know that she and Charming love him and haven't forgotten about him and are coming home to him made me aww.
-Zelena: "Take her. You can protect her. I can't. My magic's unpredictable. I don't care if I never see her again. You have to save her, Regina, please." Me: Oh my heart. This is Zelena not letting King Solomon split the baby in two. This is Zelena being a true mother and I was not at all expecting this and it made me really emotional.
-And since I was already emotional over the scene with Zelena, Henry coming down and letting everyone know that little Neal heard Snow and Charming singing him to sleep made me teary. (And I love Emma reading the story aloud with her hand on Snow's shoulder. And when Snow reaches up and grasps Emma's hand and Emma's rubbing her thumb over Snow's hand? OMG KILL ME NOW.)
-I really like the effect of Hades blowing out the candles to light them. Hee!
-Damn it, Zelena! Stop blowing holes in my [new] ship! (Hell Witch, holla!)
-Okay, so Hades made the Underworld in Storybrooke's image to give Zelena everything Regina got and tortured her birthday out of Cora. LIKE, WHY DO I FIND THIS CUTE?! I SHOULD NOT FIND THIS CUTE! THEY'RE EVIL BUT THIS IS CUTE! SEND HELP!
