Chapter 2: Ryeowook
Ryeowook knew Yesung wasn't a saint. Despite his clumsiness, sequential awkwardness, and weird but endearing habits, that man wasn't an innocent person like what some people might think. No, that man was an observer, thinker, somehow dangerous but captivating as well. But of course his hyung wasn't a bad person either. Sometimes the man was just too curious; like a kid wanting to know a whole new world he hadn't known. He didn't have any bad purpose. And he had cute moments Ryeowook always loved too.
That was probably why Ryeowook didn't say anything when he saw Yesung playing with Kyuhyun's mind. He didn't know what exactly the game his hyung played, but he didn't miss the way Kyuhyun clenched his hands and gritted his teeth when they went to cafe a few days ago. He didn't miss how Kyuhyun avoided their eyes and went straightly to his and Sungmin's sharing room as soon as they arrived at the dorm. And he certainly didn't miss Sungmin's worried glance either. But Ryeowook didn't say anything. This was Yesung's game, and he wouldn't interfere. Atleast, until he knew what exactly was the game about. Until then, he'd wait.
He needed to help Yesung take care Ddangkoma and its brothers anyway.
But apparently, he didn't have to interfere. Ryeowook sometimes amazed how Kyuhyun could wear that emotionless mask so perfectly. When the three of them was practicing for the performance (KRY-as people called them, their initial which could also read as 'cry' because they specialized in ballad mournful song), Kyuhyun didn't show any sign of anger or even annoyance. Ryeowook wouldn't say that Kyuhyun sang perfectly at the practise; well, he did, in one way. His pitch control and his tone was perfect as usual, but he didn't feel any emotion from him. Ballad was about showing emotions through song, and without those feelings, a song would be just another song.
That's why he was amazed then, when at the performance day, Kyuhyun sang with so much feelings it practically pouring out of him. Maybe it's the song, TVXQ's 'Why did I fall in love with you?', or probably somehow Kyuhyun had gotten away from Yesung's game. Either way, it warmed him up knowing their performance was a success. He couldn't stop smiling even after they had gotten off the stage.
“Hey, that was great!”
Ryeowook smiled when he's pulled into a hug. He watched as his bouncy hyung released him and then hugged Kyuhyun as well before he finally wrapped his arms around Yesung's neck. Kissing his lips. And Ryeowook was thorn between smiling for his hyungs happiness or crying silently. He chose to not doing both.
He contented himself by linked his arm with Kyuhyun. The younger male seemed indifference at first, but when Ryeowook touched him, he felt it then. Kyuhyun was still stiff, tense, whatever his problem was. He looked up to see Kyuhyun's face, but the later only stared at distance. And somehow he felt like he understood Kyuhyun's feeling, although actually he didn't even know the slightest bit about what the younger male's feeling. He put his head on his shoulder, giving his dongsaeng any strength he could offer. Though in the back of his mind, he realized maybe he was the one who needed the younger male's strength. To be indifference, to keep smiling no matter happen.
“Yesung-hyung, your singing was amazingly beautiful. I though I've said it before, but I'm going to say it again anyway. You have the best voice in the world!”
Ryeowook completely agreed with Sungmin; he just wished he was the one who said it.
“Sungmin, you said it as if he were singing solo. Think about what Kyuhyun and Ryeowook feel.”
Another voice heard, and Leeteuk emerged from the crowd. He had smile on his face, showing off his dimple on his left cheek. Ryeowook automatically smiled back, it's hard not too when you saw a smile like that. Leeteuk was really kind and he had this magic to make everyone smile just by looking at him. Ryeowook saw Sungmin laughed and ran to him, hugged the eldest tightly before he comprehend what Leeteuk said. He quickly turned his head to his bestfriends.
“Ah. Right, I'm sorry. Kyuhyunnie, Wookie. You two were doing awesome too~”
Ryeowook only laughed, he felt Kyuhyun stiffened even more but he didn't say anything. He tightened his hold on the younger male's arm though. He thought he saw Leeteuk glanced at them for a second, but the next second the elder had his eyes on Sungmin and was ruffling his hair.
“Hyung, where's the other?” said Ryeowook suddenly. He had expected the dorm members would be all here, watching their performance.
“Ah, right,” Sungmin spoke after hearing Ryeowook's question, “Did you see Heechul-hyung and Zhoumi, hyung? We promised to go together after this.”
Leeteuk smiled at him, then at Sungmin. Ryeowook was kind of jealous seeing Leeteuk smiled so fondly to Sungmin, but he guessed it's because his hyung was just lovable. He too thought Sungmin as an adorable person. His cute facial expression and his sweet voice. Some would think Sungmin was one of those talkative persons, but he's not. Actually his hyung was rather quite, though he could be a bit bouncy and touchy when he's happy. And he's strong too, although he might looked too sweet and fragile at first. Sungmin was the one who held him when he had homesickness at his first month at dorm. Sungmin was his bestfriend. He could understand why Yesung liked him so much.
“We came together, but after your performance we just separated. Last I saw, Heechul was dragging Hankyung and Siwon to get some lunch, and Zhoumi was meeting his childhood friend who just came from China,” Leeteuk looked toughtful, “As for the other, I recalled Kibum spoke something about audition, while the trouble makers, well, I actually don't know where they are.”
“You didn't come with Kangin?” It was Yesung who spoke. Ryeowook didn't know if it was just his feeling or not, but he saw Leeteuk's eyes darkened.
“No, I didn't, Yesung.”
“Is that so? Weird.”
Ryeowook knew then it wasn't only his feeling. He could see Leeteuk tried his hardest not to show any emotion on his face. He glanced at Sungmin who was texting someone, Kyuhyun who still refused to acknowledge everyone's presences, and Yesung who stared at Leeteuk's face intently. As usual, his hyung noticed more than other people did.
Sungmin seemed to realize the heavy atmosphere as he put away his cellphone and so he quickly pulled Yesung to Leeteuk, spoke cheerfully to lighten the mood, “I guess I'd have to wait for them then. Yesung-hyung, let's eat, you too Leeteuk-hyung.”
Sungmin turned his head to him and Kyuhyun.
“Kyu-“
“I'll pass, hyung. I already promised Ryeowook to go with him.”
“Wha-Oh, yeah. Sorry, hyung.”
Ryeowook looked dumbfounded for a while. First because Kyuhyun suddenly talked, and second because he knew for sure he didn't have any promise with Kyuhyun. He quickly got the message though. He didn't know why he felt a bit sorry when Sungmin bit his lips and smiled.
“It's okay. See you at the dorm later.”
Maybe because his hyung's smile didn't quite reach his eyes.
oOo
“So what do you want to talk about, Kyuhyun?”
Ryeowook finally spoke. He noticed the magnae had been more relaxed than a few moments ago. Maybe that's because Yesung wasn't around them anymore. He didn't know what's the problem, but he thought it's quite big. Because Kyuhyun usually wasn't the one who would close himself, he usually would be proud to show off to his opponent. If it's like this, most probably Kyuhyun was near losing or he didn't quite confident to win this game.
They were sitting in a fast food restaurant, eating french fries and hamburgers. With milkshake and cola. Kyuhyun groaned at Ryeowook's words, looked mildly annoyed.
“Can't you wait until we've finished eating?”
“I can, but I'm curious about what you're going to say.”
Kyuhyun shrugged, eating his french fries slowly as if thinking about something. Ryeowook starred. Kyuhyun starred. It's kind of weird actually. The silence and the starring things. But finally the younger gave up. He drank his cola as if he's drinking beer and then dramatically said:
“I love Sungmin.”
“Oh.”
“...”
“...”
“Wait. That's all you gotta say? I practically confessing my undying love to your bestfriend here.” Kyuhyun asked with disbelief. And Ryeowook had to laugh at this, the magnae after all was just a baby. He sulked when things didn't go his way.
“Your undying love, what?” Ryeowook repeated him slowly before broke into another fits of laughter. He coughed when Kyuhyun glared at him, effectively stopping his laughter. “You know you're being ridiculous. What else do I have to say?”
“I don't know... something. Argh, I don't even know myself.”
Ryeowook watched Kyuhyun fondly, rather liking this side of Kyuhyun. The magnae was usually calm and composed, snarky and stone-headed, evil minded and smug, some qualities that made the other thought the magnae title didn't suit him at all. Hence why Ryeowook who was a lot more polite to his hyungs got the title eternal magnae. The hyungs didn't want to accept evil reincarnated as their lovely dongsaeng. He wished he could see this side of Kyuhyun more, but without the problem that followed it.
He smiled sadly.
“It's painful to see him with someone else, isn't it?”
“What am I supposed to do?”
“You know what they said, if you loved someone set them free.”
Kyuhyun snorted, obviously hated that suggestion. He quietly said, “I don't want to set him free. He's mine.”
He had to smile at that. Kyuhyun was refreshing. He'd never know what he would say or do next, kind of reminded him to Yesung. They both unpredictable. Ryeowook played with his milkshake straw, starting his argument slowly, “It's just my personal opinion, but I think, loving someone is to wishing them happiness even when they're not with you.”
“That's so cheesy, Ryeowook. Fortunately that's definitely not my definition of love. I want him and so I'll have him. It's not like Sungmin loves Yesung anyway.”
“He doesn't?”
Ryeowook watched as Kyuhyun scowled. For second he had dared to hope what Kyuhyun said was true. Second later he felt bad for thinking like that about his bestfriends. So he was glad when Kyuhyun answered annoyingly, “Well, I hope he doesn't. I know they're sleeping together, and all that lovey dovey action... Okay, I don't know. Maybe he does. The hell I care. I want him.”
“You're being egoist Kyuhyun.”
“And you like Yesung, I can tell.”
Ryeowook smiled.
“Maybe, But unlike you, I won't force him to love me. If he's happy with Sungmin-hyung, then it's fine.”
“You're masochist.”
“I'm not!”
Ryeowook had to laugh again at Kyuhyun's accusation. Masochist, he didn't even want to know why Kyuhyun chose that word. It wasn't like Ryeowook felt pain when he's seeing Yesung with Sungmin. Well, maybe he did feel it, a bit. But he was speaking the truth when he said he only wished for his loves one to be happy. So there were those fleeting pain sometimes, big deal, it's nothing he couldn't handle anyway. The happiness he felt was far greater than the pain, so it's alright.
“I don't understand you at all, Ryewook.”
“Because you're spoiled brat who never learn to share.”
“I can't help that I'm so adorable people always spoil me.”
“Except Heechul-hyung.”
Kyuhyun snorted at his words.
“He will at the end. Someday even Heechul will fall under my aegyo charm.”
“He'll be furious if he heard you speak his name like that.”
“I know.”
The magnae grinned at him, and Ryeowook automatically grinned back. They ate in comfortable silence, with occasionally banter as Kyuhyun took his fries a few times. At the end of the meal, when their plates were clean and stomachs were full, Kyuhyun decided to speak the matter again.
“Well, I'm not going to back off. I'll get him no matter what.”
He's content with his life and he never willing to take risk. Maybe that's why he felt a bit scared hearing Kyuhyun's words. He just hoped the magnae wouldn't do anything stupid.
