I have a theory to explain all emotional pain.
I believe that the human body is an entity capable of movement in 6 dimensions, existing (1), and consisting of width (2), depth (3), continuance through time (4), multiple possible life situations (5), and the will or desire to move through these possible situations in a specific direction (6). Our will, which is the manifestation of our 6th dimensional movement towards a formal reality we want to exist in, is like getting a degree in order to get a job in a certain profession, or learning to play the guitar to be in a famous band, or acting in a way in order to impress a girl. Each of these desires is a will. We have the will to survive, or get money. I believe that the will is part of our body, simply in the sixth dimension, and since we cannot detect this part of ourselves with our senses of vision, touch, taste, hearing, or smell, we don't necessarily associate our desires as part of ourselves. If this is the case, then it follows that if something that we will to occur does not happen, we should feel pain, just as if we were cut on the arm.
Imagine you have this mental image of spending the rest of your life with someone. If they are killed, your plan for the future is thrown out the window and you feel intense pain, because such a large part of your will has been severed from ever reaching formal reality. The larger the will and the more planned and detailed in your mind, the more pain will be felt should something arise to prevent it from happening. The larger the will the larger the part of you that is hurt, and thus the more pain you will experience.
Any Taoist will tell you that if you have no desires you will suffer no pain. Take everything as it comes. If you expect anything, you will be let down.
