I ended up marathonning PG and going to bed at a God-forsaken hour and am now thoroughly zonked.
And Momo and Kairi join the already long list of my favorite ships.
But before I proceed to my exciting (if only) thoughts on the rest of the eps, has anyone seen either all of the anime or read the manga through to the end? Because I am trying to figure out if Momo and Touji had sex and I can't possibly decide. Usually, if a couple just gets back together and they are sharing a bedroom and the last thing you see is them horizontally kissing and then it cuts out, I know what to assume. But then Momo acts like it's such a huge deal in the last ep when they are in a hotel room together again, as if they haven't before. And they never elucidate. Grrrr.
I am actually kinda undecided, anyway, on what I think if Momo and Touji did have sex. After all, she did give up on Kairi and got back together with the guy she crushed on for ages. And she and Touji would have had sex a year ago if it wasn't for Sae's phone call that set off the chain reaction that resulted in the break-up and her falling for Kairi etc etc. And poor Touji does love her and he spent all this time protecting her (bone-headedly, but still) and he loses her at the end, so he deserves at least some happiness or props. But, OTOH, I am a Kairi/Momo shipper. And the poor boy was trudging through a typhoon on foot to meet her at the time. While she was knocking boots with Touji. But then Momo was justified in finally giving up on Kairi. But rebound sex is bad. But Touji is someone she got back together with. But but but but. I keep going in circles. Well, I severely doubt Kairi is a virgin, so I suppose it's OK, but still...I am confused about what I think. But then what else is new? I guess if no one else has read/seen it, I'll have to wait until
crumpeteer does and then maybe she can enlighten me.
The scary thing is, I ended up finding even Ryo and Sae (Sae to a lesser extent) human by the end. Actually, Sae/Ryo are totally my Dark Ship for the show. They are so suited for each other. Too bad it didn't work out, but I find that last image of Ryo, looking at the pictures of children on a parenting web-site pretty poignant. Maybe there is hope for him yet. I think I am just a sucker for angst. And Sae and Ryo are like the dark reflections of Kairi and Momo, anyway; and once again, the commonality between Momo and Kairi gets highlighted when Sae and Ryo discuss how they feel inadequate because they inspire admiration but they can't win love. The weird thing is, in his twisted way Ryo does love Kairi. When Kairi is down with pneumonia, he shows up to pay the bills. But I think making your kid brother miserable (Ryo has got to be at least 5 years older) to make yourself feel better is a sucky sucky thing. At least Sae isn't family.
On the Kairi and Momo (melo)drama front, mmmm. Actually, honestly speaking, I preferred when it was a bit more low-key on the angst. But it is rather realistic that the characters keep fluctuating between mature adults and children. That scene where Momo tells Kairi she wants to date him even though she knows he still has feelings for Misao and they will work out their relationship is very grown-up. But Momo is not a thirty-something and she can't keep it up the whole time. Or Kairi thinking that he still loves Misao, even as he admits to himself he loves Momo and she makes him happy, and it taking some time and some outside advice for it to sink in that he just idealized Misao because he was so lonely when he first met her, he fixated on her like a drowning person would. If he was older, it would take him much less time to figure himself out.
I have to say, that is one stubborn, stubborn boy. Once he gets his head on straight, and the circumstances conspire against him, he ends up travelling through a typhoon to meet Momo, walking 20 km through a landsliding terrain. Of course, Momo, who is a pretty reasonable girl, told him that he should get his head on straight and then if he decides he loves her the most, to meet her at a station at a particular time. And since we still have a number of eps to go, he can't make it and by the time he does, it's so much later she left, and also, due to bad luck, she thinks he's with Misao. And he calls everyone to find out where she went, and finding out she went to the place she booked for them for a romantic get-away, ends up going there. In a typhoon. On foot. And then he calls the hotel and they tell him that yes, Momo has checked in. With her companion. And he just slumps on the road, in the rain, and it's all very angsty and artistic. And he ends up walking all the way to where she is anyway, only to see her holding hands with Touji on the platform (Did they or didn't they? Argh).
And then he goes to business as usual and being his usual happy chirpy Kairi self, really confusing poor Momo who of course still lurves him. Kairi is really good at shields. But not entirely. So we get the angst of Kairi being outside her house and seeing her make out with Touji and then he is sneaking away and she sees him and he freezes and then she sees he is crying and he tells her he still has all these feelings. And then he just grabs her in the classroom and asks Touji to give her back and it's awkward and adorable and Touji is "she is not a puppy" LOL. And then Touji asking Momo to pick between them, and poor Kairi being so nervous he feels like throwing up. And Momo picking Touji so Kairi grabbing her by the hand and running out with her, trying to convince her he loves her. But Momo, I think, is very much like Kairi, and she is leery about being hurt and she doesn't want to believe him. And 'tis the end. Except then Sae tells her about Kairi and typhoon and all that stuff, and Momo finds out what really happened with Misao and Momo realizes that, all along, the one she really wanted was Kairi and she was just trying to be a good girl and stick with Touji because he was protecting her all this time. And of course, she is convinced of Kairi's love for her. Touji lets her go (duh), so off she goes, haring to find Kairi, and guess what? She ends up having to fish him out of the drink again, and their reunion scene is adorable and perfect and cute and she just hugs him and tells him she loves him and Kairi is so startled and wordless (for once) and adorable and awwwwww. Love.
Which is good, as Touji is boring, though nice. And Kairi did put her through a wringer for a bit (though not as bad as Touji, and he was always always honest and upfront with her). Yay.
Btw, Husband has been watching some PG by osmosis, while doing other stuff on the computer, and so at one point (during the typhoon sequence) we had the following conversation:
Husband: So, who is she together with now, getting some exercise?
Me: Touji. The ex.
Husband: Hmph.
Me: But she thinks Kairi has ditched her!
Husband: But he is walking through a typhoon to meet her.
Me: But she totally has reason to think that about Kairi.
Husband: Walking through a typhoon.
Me: And she found out Touji has always loved her and she had a thing for him for so long.
Husband: Typhoon. On foot.
Meet my husband, Momo/Kairi shipper. I guess a family that ships together, stays together?
Kairi/Momo smoochies. Because I am a sappy shipper. Or is it a shippy sap?
