More Black Jewels...

Am almost done with book 1.

1. "Do you think that someone like me, having lived as I've lived, being what I am, would destroy the one person he's been looking for his whole life? Do you think me such a fool I don't recognize what she is, what she will become? She is magic, Cassandra. A single flower blooming in an endless desert." AWWW. Someone has been sneaking bits of a romance novel into their dark fantasy text :P

2. "Because I couldn't bear it if there was only a blank-eyed, empty shell to love and I knew you were lost somewhere beyond reach, beyond return." Knowing how this author's brain operates, now that we know Daemon is terrified of this, this is so going to happen! Noooooooo!

3. I have just realized that in addition to returning his childhood to him, Jaenelle is teaching Daemon how to use his magic - I guess I didn't realize he was never trained properly but it makes sense. Also, most powerful woman in the world is teaching the most powerful man in the world(who was hella deadly even untrained) how to do magic? Either their enemies are about to spectacularly die or the world will end because Daemon is not the most stable person to start with and if the bad guys succeed in breaking Jaenelle, she can destroy the world.

4. "The cold swept over him, crusting him with glacial calm. He took a deep breath and smiled. If the bitch wanted a whore tonight, he'd give her a whore." I was getting so much foreboding - eeeeek! I mean, I'd love for Daemon to destroy the whole freaking place and most people in it, but Jaenelle might not like it or it could get her in trouble or or or. This book is making me paranoid. But then it sort of dissipates because Jaenelle sees Daemon dressed to kill and her one reaction is "I want an outfit like that!" and "this is an awesome hat!" LOLOLOLOLOL

5. Author, when I said I wanted more Lucivar, I didn't mean more Lucivar torture. Thanks! I mean, poor dude should not have been brought up if that was what he was going to get. Also, was possibly the most disturbing sex scene ever, even though I am mercifully not exactly clear on what exactly was happening. Also, I think Lucivar wins 'suckiest life' award.

6. Noooo! They sent Lucivar to the salt mines and Daemon is falling to pieces! There have been funerals more cheery than this book.

7. "It was the only picture Daemon had of him, taken centuries ago when Lucivar still had an aura of youthful hope, before the years and court after court had turned a handsome, youthful face into one so like the Askavi mountains he loved - beautifully brutal, holding a trace of shadow even in the brightest sunlight." I. Love. That! So very anime.

8. Speaking of things I love - "For Daemon, Winsol was the bitterest day of the year, a cruel reminder of what it had been like to grow up in Dorothea's court, of what had been required of him after the dancing had fired Dorothea's and Hepsabah's blood." Awwww, woobie! It's OK, Jaenelle will get you a gift and it will be OK, at least until Ms. Bishop will get to torturing you twice as hard, for fanservice.

9. I love this description: "He had become an accomplice in all sorts of schemes that, even in their innocence, had been thrilling. When he had dug in his heels and balked at one of her adventures, he'd been dragged along like a toy so well loved it didn't have much of its stuffing left. With his defenses breached, with his temper dulled and battered by love and his coldness trampled by mischief..." That is how I know bad things are going to happen - good guys have been happy for 7.3 seconds at a stretch!

10. "It's fitting, don't you think, that I should drink alone?" she said in a midnight whisper. Her eyes were full of awful pain. "After all, I am kindred but not kind."
You are my Queen, he thought fiercely. His body ached. She was his Queen. But with her family surrounding them, watching, there was nothing he could do or say to help her.

Dying here. Dying. It's emo and ridiculous and I love.

11. "The parting was awkward. Saetan wanted to embrace him, but Daemon became tense, almost skittish. Saetan wondered if, after all those years in Dorothea's court, Daemon had an aversion to being touched." Awww, Daddy-Son bonding time, I approve, especially when a delicious dollop of angst is ever-present.

12. Oh God, I hope hope hope Daemon rescues Jaenelle from the house of horrors before something truly horrible happens pls pls pls. Also, we have now achieved cannibalism. There goes my lunch. These books are a good diet plan.

ETA: Done! What a white-knuckle ride. Especially when that idiot Alexandra handed over Daemon's controller to the bad guys so he couldn't go rescue her, I thought I was going to kill something. But he broke the control AND destroyed half the kingdom YESSS but was sort-of too late for Jaenelle and eeeeeeeek :( Holy Cliffhanger ending, OMFG!
