I finally got enough courage (and distance) to watch the last two episodes of Gaksital properly.
Am watching them now and, wow, I forgot how excellently acted and filmed and written that drama was.
Also, I think I have suddenly developed allergies because my eyes are watering and my face is puffy and my throat is making odd sobbing noises.
I will do a proper and cap-heavy post in the evening, but I just wanted to say that I was hit with why Mok Dan had to die and Kang To had to live. It is because this was his nightmare, his worst case scenario. He would have died for her without thinking. And he would have been happy to die with her - he wants to. Except he cannot die - not when the Cause needs him, not when so many have died to protect him. But to be left all alone in the world, without his sole hope for happiness, without his own small personal miracle, without his connection to humanity, with nothing left - family, friend, lover all dead because of him and to still be forced to go on, to not be free to just lie down and die? That is the ultimate horror and this drama loves dishing that sort of thing out. If there ever was a worst case scenario, you know this drama would always pick it. Plus, in a way, this is a punishment for Kang San - as a karmic punishment for unwittingly killing his brother (not to mention other bad things he did as a Japanese officer) this is much much harsher than killing Kan To himself.
Still, when he clutches her body and wails, wails, wails and then just lies on her grave, unable to move, I fucking fucking fucking - allergies, OK? Allergies.
