Looking for chick lit recs

I am on the mend but still sick and I realized a long time ago I don't really feel like watching dramas when sick - I find it hard to read both subs and watch things at the same time when my mind is turned to slush, plus all the overwrought emo gets on my nerves (much as I love it when am otherwise healthy ( Read more... )

I am a self-confessed non-fan of chick lit, but I will give it a try sometimes (the same way I sometimes give bacon a try) and I do actually have a favourite author: Kathleen Tessaro. Her books Elegance and Innocence had a lot more depth than I was expecting from chick lit and Innocence is actually a favourite novel of mine. But it may be too much self-reflective angst for you, I don't know.

I think you'd like Meg Cabot's Size 12 is Not Fat series. Its a mystery trilogy and its so much fun. The main character, Heather Wells, is an ex pop star who now works as a residence hall director. In the first book she solves a series of "elevator surfing accidents" at the dorm she works at. There's a cute PI thats her love interest throughout the series too!

Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella is also really cute. Lexi gets a head injury and gets the mentality of her 20 something self. She finds out that she's a real bitch in the future and tries to repair her relationships with her friends. And theres this mysterious guy who tells Lexi she was going to leave her husband and be with him. Its kind of a Kdrama setup so you might like it!

Get better Mousie!

Barbara Michaels is another Elizabeth Peters pseudonym -- lots of romantic suspense there, some of which you might enjoy. M. Louisa Locke is another author on my "to-be-read" list for a Victorian mystery series.

I also recommend Annette Blair's modern, gentle cozy mysteries with a touch of light romance and a teensy bit of supernatural: the Vintage Magic series.

Hmmm... what about Jennifer Cruise? I've enjoyed most of her books and she writes well. My favorite, I think, is Bet Me, if you need a place to start. I like Julia Quinn for a light, frothy read. I actually haven't read chick lit in general for quite a while, but those two I still keep up with, though technically Julia Quinn is Regency, not chick-lit. I also remember really liking Elizabeth Lowell for romance-adventure ( ... )

Julia Quinn basically created the "light and fluffy" trend in historical romances. There are some misses, but she's generally safe. Amanda Quick/Jayne Ann Krentz is also romances novels (Krentz is contemporary, Quick is historical romances set in mostly the 1800s, though there are a couple medievals.) and the dialogue has the sharp wit going, though you notice after a while that she basically writes the same thing with new names/plot. She and Peters have a lot of fan overlap ( ... )
