Probably because you get to see things that are normally verbotten in kdramas - rock music! drugs! suicide attempts! premarital cohabitation (in high school, no less)! jail time for crimes actually committed!

I thought his wife came off extraordinarily well - a sort of a saint. The thing with the first love made sense for high school and it was a very 'we are so young and against the world' feel - I found it realistic how it didn't work out against the harsh glare of reality. The first love came across as very young and flaky to me from the start, but I don't blame her for wanting a better life - her running away was on impulse to start with.

All I got out of the first love and then wife stuff is that the guy was majorly codependent. Not my thing at all (I like my men to be productive members of the establishment and really well-adjusted) but a lot of women go for 'troubled genius' trope or just plain 'troubled' - see how many fall for musicians and bikers. I gotta say I can understand her more than I do Oh Hani though - he may have been a total basket case but at least he reciprocated her affection and when he didn't, she ditched - block of ice Baek Seung Jo didn't reciprocate for ages and Hani kept chasing him.

No idea how KTW and his wife work a long-distance marriage or if they even feel like it, but I have a couple of friends in long-distance marriages and it's hard. One of them was giving birth and her husband couldn't even make it home for delivery!
