I have started and fallen madly for Star in my Heart (Wish Upon a Star), a 1997 kdrama starring Choi Jin Shil, Ahn Jin Wook, and Cha In Pyo. I am mad mad mad for it!
The actors are all my favorites - I adore CJS, AJW does funny things to my insides, and I really like CIP. I love the story and the writing (written by the person who wrote Bali but a lot less of a fractured fairytale), and the characters are wonderful - the strong, well-adjusted, Yun Hee, Kang Min, the messed-up, sexy wannabe rockstar, and Lee Jun Hee, the quiet executive.
The story is deliciously old-fashioned and melodramatic without being over-the-top (it actually makes me think of good, serious twdramas - they are my favorite kind of drama). Yun Hee is an orphan adopted by a wealthy man (she does not know it, but she is actually his illegitimate daughter). Her stepmother and her new sister are bitches on wheels who are less than pleased by this and her new 'brother' is a disgusting skeezeball. Unlike many a heroine, however, Yun Hee has a temper and a determination to make her own way - she won't be meek or downtrodden but instead fight back and work hard for success and happiness. Her paths will cross with two best friends - wannabe rocker Kang Min and an executive Jun Hee, forming a love triangle that makes Dangermousie slurp.
Interested? Not yet?
How about some caps from the first ep?
Love triangle credits. I approve.
This drama has some entertaining fashions but at least they have an excuse - evil stepmom is a fashion designer.
Our first glimpse of our awesome heroine, Yun Hee, as she is leaving the orphanage:
On the right is Spawn of Satan, otherwise known as Half-Sis.
Jun Hee's first glimpse of heroine transfixes him:
Because she looks a lot like his ex-girlfriend. This scene was capped for the depth of plot.
Mmmm. Plot.
Pervert brother walks in on our heroine. She slugs him.
And later when evil stepsis keeps insulting her and accusing her of being a thieving orphan and other lovely things, she slaps her, hard. YES.
Heroine goes to a club to meet a friend who works there and Kang Min and Joon Hee are there. Noticing his reserved friend is transfixed, completely-not-reserved Kang Min offers to chat her up for his buddy.
Bwah. She is not interested and tells him she is waiting for a guy. Sorry, you are out of luck! He tells Jun Hee he'll have to find someone else as the girl he was checking out is unavailable :)
As they are about to wrap up and leave they notice a drunk thug accosting her. Yun Hee, being awesome, fights back, for herself and her friend.
Two guys to the rescue! When the future love triangle plus the friend hide in a store, the girls catch up on old times - on the run or not, that is the first chance they had to talk so tough :) (Seriously, I adore Yun Hee so. Anyone who can be this fun in the middle of a run for her life ROCKS).
I see what you did there, Kang Min. Have fun with your snark, boy.
I kind of like that during this whole scene, Jun Hee basically does not say a word. He really is reserved, isn't he?
This scene was THE BEST.
I don't care about the cheesy hair or the 90s shirts. Ahn Jae Wook does funny things to my inside. Funny funny things.
Ooooh boy.
So sorry, Jun Hee!
You know it's an old drama - there is smoking!
Do give it a chance! You can find it at AM-A for download.
Have a MV, too:

The other drama I tried is Invincible Lee Pyung Kang, on
princess-dexter's recommendation (go to her LJ to read a truly awesome pusher post). I have a nasty cold and have been promised fluffiness. I have watched the first ep and I like it - it delivers fluff. YESSS.
The 'historical" On Dal and Pyung Kang:
Modern Pyung Kang. She's kinda awesome.
PK's kid sister. I adore her and want her for my own sis.
Modern-day On Dal in considerably less clothes than in the past.
Secondary Girl seizing the initiative. I approve.
On Dal, listening to his dead mother. AWWWW. I like the boy, even if he's a doof. He is actually pretty cute, in a Hwan-like way.
More historical silliness:
