Hong Gil Dong ep 22 thoughts and caps

Just finished episode 22 of Hong Gil Dong and wow.

WOW.

How does it get better with every episode?

I must be in the minority but I like HGD more after it turned deadly serious. And I can so see the ending as inevitable now. Good job, Hong Sisters!

Also, much as I adore Yi Nok/Gil Dong (their last scene sort of broke me), I confess to liking the stuff about what consitutes good government and monarchy v. democracy, idealism v. pragmatism even better.

Because it's an incredibly dark view, isn't it? GD stuck CH on the throne but by the very virtue of becoming a King from a rebel dispossessed, this makes CH the bastion of oligarchic privileges. And while CH might have fought it off a bit under other circumstances, the revelation about the family makes it impossible for him. That last shot of him, with the shadow of his mad brother saying 'welcome' is incredibly creepy.

And when intercut with joyful GD proclaiming a new era? Ouch.

Honestly, while the pacing picked up a bit much in the last eps (they are trying to cram too much in, I think), and while Creepy Goth Girl's machinations will precipitate the break much faster than it would have occurred otherwise (side note: hate CGG so incredibly much. In fact, she and the girl from The Outsiders are the worst. The rest, while they might make characters' lives a misery never actually cause their death), I think an eventual break was inevitable, as GD is getting more and more radicalized by the process.

This drama has so many interesting things to say about revolutions and government, which is something unusual for a kdrama.

I am also amused to note that Kang Ji Hwan seems to have carved a small but awesome niche for himself as a distanced person who becomes an ardent revolutionary. Heh.

I am not a CH fan, but here he is kissing Yi Nok:

Poor GD misses her:

And flashbacks to incredibly adorable scene:

Poor woobie:

Lookin' scary. But still like a girl:

Realizing the truth of the sword:

With Madam Noh:

Mad King:

YUM:

This scene in ep 22 killed me:

I love this scene SO much. They are so in love and so in pain (translations by dramabeans)

Yi Nok: “But if… if I try to hold back and it doesn’t work… then, can I go to you?”
Gil Dong: “No. Keep holding back.”
Yi Nok: “Dummy.”
Gil Dong: “If you come to me, I won’t be able to send you back. So until you feel like you’ll die from holding back, you can’t come to me. If you can stand it, like now… As long as you can stand it, you can’t do that.”

Poor CH, his world in ruins:

I love when that scene ends with GD walking away thinking 'I can bear it, I can bear it, I can bear it.'

ETA: This shot from ep 24 literally makes me cry, because I know what's going on at the moment. Damn.
