Post-apocalyptic swordsman hunting for his body parts? I love you, Japan!

One of the reasons I like Asian entertainment?

I have just watched a movie about a guy in post-apocalyptic New Zealand Japan who is on a quest to recover his 48 missing body parts, which have been taken by demons. He is accompanied by a cross-dressing female thief and he has swords for arms.

Dororo.

How much do I love you? Almost as much as I love filmi-girl for bringing it over.

Did I mention that our hero, Hyakkomaru, was sold to the demons by his own father, in exchange for power? And his parents dumped what was left (i.e. a husk) down the river, not being those who believed it was good to care for the disabled?

Poor Hyakkomaru. Not only are all his body parts artificial (did I mention swords for arms?????), but they are made out of parts of slain infants. Whose ghosts haunt him! And his every waking moment is torment and pain! Because of the body parts jointure! I must confess though, the guy who made him picked the right infants, because Hyakkomaru is HOT!

Ahem. Where was I?

And his father figure died when he was young! And the only way to recover the body parts is to kill a demon who has one! But when he gets the body part back, it's super-painful!

Poor Hyakkomaru. Whenever you think it can't get worse for him, it does. He gets mistaken for a demon and kicked out of the village he saved. He finds out his family (which he hoped would love and take him back if he recovered missing body bits) are actually a bunch of bastards that sold him off. His father wins the award for worst father ever completely though, a satisfactory feat, being eight times worse than any other fictional father ever. Not only did he sell his kid to the demons, he was going to kill what's left. He grudgingly allowed his wife to drop the husk into a basket and send it downriver. Not that the mother is much better: she had a new kid and gave him the same name! And when poor Hyakkomaru shows up, Daddy Dearest attempts to kill him, says he doesn't regret selling him, all the while being willing to die for his other son. Poor poor poor Hyakkomaru..

On the plus side, he's got Dororo, the most awesome heroine in ages. Some sort of a crazy cross between Sujini (Legend), Yi Nok (Hong Gil Dong) and Domyouji (Hanadan). Dororo is a self-proclaimed best thief ever, and she follows Hyakkomaru because a guy who kills demons by profession and who has swords for arms is her idea of a fun time. Yup, she follows Hyakkomaru around because she likes trouble and there is plenty where he is around. They are so my OTP and must at least hug in the sequel. Please. Also, awwww she has sworn vengeance on his father and his whole family because they killed hers (neither know he is that guy's son until near the end) but she gives up his vengenace for him and prevents him from killing his father :)

Seriously, their adorableness together (she actually makes Mr. Broody smile) is incredible. Plus, hey, nothing says love like she is the first thing he sees with his newly returned eyes. God, I love that I can type up a sentence like this :P

Anyway, Dororo. Go watch it.

ETA: I just found out that the leads of Dororo have both co-starred in Orange Days, which is a drama that was highly recommended to me anyway. And they play an OTP! I think I found my next drama.
