Interesting. For some reason I had always assumed that she an RK were already over for a while when she met Sunil.
But it sort of makes you appreciate D and Hema, those crazy kids, running off and converting to Islam (even though they totally didn't believe in it) just so she could legally become his second wife.
Nope, apparently her walking out was a huge shock for him.
Whoa, crazy!
I'm not sure on the details about D and Hema. I just remember that there was some sort of scandal about them quickly converting (because they so obviously aren't serious). I remember I even saw a copy of the marriage license posted somewhere on some message board. But I don't know if it eventually ended up being legal.
From what I understand based on some Hema and Esha interviews, he is like part time dad to both families, but I get the impression that he lives more with Sunny&Bobby's mom and comes to visit Esha and the girls (at least that seems to be the current situation).
Gotta love Bollywood. So full of crazy star stories. In a way, because the mores are so different, it actually reminds me a lot more of old black&white Hollywood rather than current Hollywood. Where you had all of those serial marriers like Lana Turner and so.
Yeah, apparently the one inkling he had is she came to visit him in high heels. Raj was only 5'7" and was a bit sensitive about it, especially since Nargis wasn't that much shorter (and he was sort of the runt, as Shammi was 6' and both Shashi and Prithviraj over 5'10"). So he said he just stared at her heels for 20 minutes and sort of knew it was all over and told her 'you have a tall man in your life.' (Sunil Dutt was 6')
Re: Hema and D. So odd. Why any woman would want to settle for being a part-time wife is weird to me.

Bwahahahhhahahah. Funny. And odd. The few Sunil Dutt movies I have seen he never looked particularly tall to me.
Re: Hema and D. So odd. Why any woman would want to settle for being a part-time wife is weird to me. I dunno. It seems to me that Bollywood history is filled with those Nargis type stories where she is the long term mistress while he is married. Compared to that, I feel the status of second wife would at least be comparably secure (Helen, Hema). At least she has something to show for and she can have his kids

Heh. Maybe he slouched? :)
Re: second wife. I suppose that makes sense. The choice is either to marry someone outside the industry or be a mistress to someone in it. Sucky.
But yeah, after reading all these things, I can see why Rekha supposedly thought she could get Big B to marry her. I mean, the industry is swaring with bigamists :)
Apparently Raj used to say things like 'Krishna is the mother of my children and Nargis is the mother of my films.' Too bad for him, she wanted flesh-and-blood kids :) His friends say that if he ever loved anyone other than his films, it was Nargis, because with the others, he sort of 'willed' himself in love with them as sort of a movie thing.
I know I'm repeating myself, but I can only recommend Zakhm as an example of how somebody could end up in a situation like this. It portrays the sort of second/part time wife situation from the POV of the children while still being sympathetic to the mother. Supposedly based on the real life story of Mahesh Bhatt's mother.

Yeah, Aish got lucky. :)
Though unmarried actors seem to be more frequent now (Salman, most of the youngling actors), as are divorces (Saif, Aamir).

I always wondered about D and Hema. Did they convert back to Hinduism? What? And who does he live with, Hema or his first wife?
