ipickquinn asked me for a Finn/Quinn fic and I was screaming at my television for this scene the entire time I was watching. So I put one and one together and made this. Special thanks to Kelsey for beta reading this.
A heavy sigh left Finn's lips as he wandered the empty corridors of the school after Glee. His thoughts were jumbled and just all over the place that focusing on one thing was damn near impossible. As if yesterday and his breakdown on Kurt wasn't enough, he had just sat through and helped Puck serenade Quinn's baby, the baby that was once upon a fairytale time his. All it did, listening to Puck sing to her and talk about naming her Beth was remind him of his own song and when he suggested Drizzle. It wasn't as if his feelings for Drizzle, now Beth, had magically disappeared, or even his feelings for Quinn. Rachel was good and different and he did like her but she wasn't Quinn.
His thoughts had been so wrapped up he had almost failed to hear the faint pencil scratchings as he passed by the art room. It wasn't unusual for someone to be there but it was just after five and the school was empty. Back tracking a few steps, Finn peered into the room and stopped when he caught sight of blonde curls and a big pink dress, sitting at one of the tables and scribbling away. He hesitated for a moment before stepping into the room, his hands buried deep into his pockets and then cleared his throat.
Quinn craned her neck slowly at first and Finn knew she assumed him to be Puck. Her face twitched a little seeing him instead, licked her lips and squeaked, "Hi."
"Hey."
They were the first words the one time couple had spoken to each other in weeks. Finn stood in the doorway for another moment before he walked inside and sat across from her at the large flat table. He was thankful for the large space to fill the awkward silence between them. At first, he was urged to ask for her reaction to Puck's song, about his suggestion and how he wanted to be there but thought against it. Quinn seemed to be paying no attention to him as she continued to draw as if he had never stepped foot into the room and sat down.
"Were you hoping I was Puck?" Finn asked, the bitter tone in his voice betraying the emotions he had hoped to hide. His hands folded on the table as he tried to catch a glimpse of what Quinn had been drawing.
"I was hoping you weren't him. I don't really want to deal with him now." She responded, her eyes remaining on the paper in front of her.
"Don't you, like, live with him?"
"Yes but it's not really by choice, Finn." She snapped and instantly forced the defiant Finn down. Sighing, the blonde lifted her head and eyes to him and shook her head, "I'm sorry. You don't deserve to bear the brunt of my anger anymore." Just as quickly her head had dipped back down to the paper and the silence filled the two again.
"Were you ever going to tell me?" Finn finally said breaking the quiet once more. It hadn't been his intention to ever ask since he had tricked himself into believing he didn't care but she was here now. The girl who had caused so much heartbreak and pain was just sitting in front of him and he had come to her first, offered the olive branch so to speak.
"Honestly? No."
She didn't look at him or even pause in her speech, which in turn made him more angry. Did she think it was a joke, his feelings about the baby? Drizzle was his first. She tricked him, she lied to him and now she was just shutting him down completely. He exhaled loudly and made a move to leave, storming passed her when cold pale fingers wrapped themselves around his wrist, forcing him to stop. Well, she didn't force him to stay since the quarterback could of easily ripped himself away from her.
"Finn, please don't storm away from me." Her voice was so meek that at first Finn had to wonder if it was Quinn who was speaking. Looking down into her hazel eyes, he searched for some form of the head bitch in charge he had dated and found now.
"At first, I wasn't going to tell you because I was selfish. Actually, not telling you even after was still pretty selfish."
Her fingers had dropped from his wrist and somehow his body carried him to the stool, sitting next to Quinn, his eyes remained focused while his face stoic, listening to her and wondering if these were answers he truly wanted.
"You were so dedicated. To me, to her, after awhile it became easier to lie and believe that it was really you who was the father than Puck. You were more excited about her than me Finn. When you were loving her, it felt like you were loving me. It doesn't mean I don't know that it was wrong but she gave me something good from you and I didn't want to give it up. I didn't want to take her from you and give her to Puck."
Finn's eyes lowered to his hands and fidgeted with them nervously as he tried to think of something to say. He wanted to hate her, he really did but he wasn't over her. He wasn't over Drizzle. And this Quinn in front of him, this soft spoken remorseful blonde was tugging at his heart strings, filling in the gaps she had left but with something a little more than love. It was compassion and remorse, sorrow for what she had done and hope for forgiveness.
"I-I know you're gonna have Puck there and that's cool and everything but, before you give her away, a-am I, can I?" His words were failing him but not how he wanted them to. Quinn had turned completely to face him, their knees touching as a cold sweat broke out along his brow.
"I'd love for you to meet her, Finn." Quinn's voice broke, causing the boy to lift his head in time to see the water well in the hazel eyes and spill over. His first reaction had been to say sorry like times before but this wasn't before. Those weren't tears he was used to fixing, nor was he really supposed to try to fix them. He nodded slowly, licking his lips to wet them and mustered the largest smile he could.
"So why did you come here? I doubt you were really seeking me out after Puck's little show." There was a gentle laugh and Finn let out a chuckle as well, relaxing in her presence.
"I was just thinking about some stuff I said to Kurt and then when Puck sang to Drizzle, it just brought up old memories."
"You still call her Drizzle?" The blonde laughed again and Finn just shrugged once more, "I liked it. I guess you're calling her Beth though?"
"I don't know what I'm calling her. I feel like whoever is adopting her should be allowed to have a say in her name."
Finn nodded and turned as well when the blonde went back to her drawing. "So you're still giving her up even though Puck wants to keep her?"
Quinn sighed again but didn't set down her pencil down, "I was giving her up for you. In part, that's still why. I don't want you to have to see her and watch her grow up calling Puck her dad when you wanted it first. It's stupid I know but if I'm not ready to raise a baby with you, then I'm really not ready to raise one with him."
The silence flowed between them again as Finn sat with his thoughts, processing what could possibly be the sweetest thing Quinn ever said to him. It made sense then and he accepted that if given the choice, he would of been picked first. This new Quinn, he liked her and wished for a moment he had been dating her and not the Cheerio. He had spent so much of this year growing and changing, pushing and shoving and while he hadn't lost it all like Quinn had, this new Finn was dangerously close to losing it all.
Reaching over, he set his hand on the small of her back and rubbed it, his eyes forward again with a smile on his lips when she sighed contently and her own smile grazed her lips. It was the start of something new with them, a friendship that had endless possibilities. She was so broken yet so was he. She was the missing parts of him and he was of her. It wasn't much but it was something. It was the blonde who made he want to be better than he was now.
"Quinn?"
"Hmm?"
"Can you help me make a Gaga outfit? There's something I need to do."
