Psychology versus Game Theory

Sep 17, 2006 08:00

Once again my facebook-stalking powers have yielded something good and worthy of discussion. :-)

One of my friends went to what seems to be a very good party yesterday night (free from alcohol? I wish, but close enough...) which featured a movie and the game Apples to Apples. Ah, this game brings back fond memories...

I have yet to see the rational side to human nature. I can understand people getting upset (and not wanting to play again) at chess, go, ... any game of strategy or skill, but Apples to Apples? I was most surprised to see my friends simultaneously get upset at losing the game to me... truly only a mastermind could win such an absurd game every single time... yet somehow I pulled it off! Sounds like something either A) Homestar Runner could do or B) Homestar Runner could upset at someone for doing. =)

Well, then they appointed the 5-year-old who couldn't read to be the judge and everyone was happy again. (I still won most of those!) :-)

Maybe I should play to lose every single game, and people would enjoy my company more. I don't know. :-D

Wow... I'm in a surprisingly good mood for a Dan who hasn't taken his multivitamins yet this morning... :-)

As for game theory, I'll just say that while any game is still going on, I play it to win. My favorite instance of this was when I won a 4-pawn-down endgame with a really nasty trick... it was SO funny... :-)
