From the Collection: Enrique Corominas' Dorian Gray [NSFW: Nudity, Violence]

I'm going to try to make a greater effort to add content to this journal and my adjacent "Picture" journals (withallofmyself and wickedaphorisms for aesthetics and resources reasons but also just to show off my ridiculous Dorian Gray/Wilde collection (I'm more vain on this point than you could ever imagine). Because today is Dorian's birthday, I've been pulling lots of pictures and this is a crowning jewel of my collection.

Part comic book, part concept art portfolio, I first saw Enrique Corominas' work online years and years ago (I almost want to say in my DeviantArt years, which makes me feel internet-elderly) and then proceeded to wait ages until it was finally published. There isn't an English language edition and because I'm more confident in my ability to read French than Spanish, that's what I got, as soon as I could get my hands on it!

Not a word-for-word adaptation, Dorian Gray is a gorgeous, hallucinatory adventure through both Dorian's descent into decadence and evil and an absinthe dream of turn-of-the-century London. Every single panel is a marvel, as are the included paintings in the art portfolio in the back. Dozens of unfeatured illustrations can be found around the internet. Corominas' huge scenery pieces are absolutely stunning, from their colors that are either glittering and jewel-tone or gritty and murky, highlighting the social disparity of 19th century London. Corominas' doesn't flinch from Picture's gothic elements, marrying it with Aesthetic motifs to pull the viewer into a dream world that is as terrifying as it is beautiful and arousing. A pleasure to just look at, even if you can't read the words (my goal this winter is to sit down with a translation guide and read the whole thing). Possibly my favorite edition/adaptation of the six book versions I own.

I have included a few of the pieces here for your viewing pleasure. There will be more on Basil Hallward and Harry Wotton's pages that are relevant to those particular characters, I have tried to focus just on Dorian images here. Links to the artist's website and an Amazon link for the French copy of the book at the end of the post.
