finalssssss

Dec 09, 2008 00:44

good morning everyone.
finals time is here again
as if i didn't miss chile enough before...
i've not slept much the past coupla days and i feel a little loopy.

by some miracle i was able to finish both essays today. just one little baby essay to write and i'm halfway done. yaaay. it sucks that when i get back to tx i have to write a 20-page paper on chilean social policy, but you know i'd much rather do it in houston over 7 days than try to finish it by sunday (when i fly out). tooo crazy.

speaking of crazy, what was i thinking, downing a second cup of english breakfast at 11pm?

sooo. i never post the books i've been reading and i've read a lot of great stuff this semester. some good books if you wanna look into it:
Beyond the Borders: American Literature and Post-Colonial Theory (Deborah L. Madsen).
^LOVE HER.
(Out)Classed Women: Contemporary Chicana Writers on Inequitable Gendered Power Relations (Phillipa Kafka)
^EQUALLY AS AMAZING
'Yo Soy Malinche' : Chicana Writers and the Poetics of Ethnonationalism. (Mary Louise Pratt)
^WANT HER IN MY BED NOW
Margarita Zamora's Abreast of Columbus (haha!): Gender and Discovery*
I'd also recommend In the Time of Butterflies by Julia Alvarez (same lady who wrote How the Garcia Girls lost their Accents)..but only if you have some tissues next to you. and The Death of Artemio Cruz (classic).
I would NOT recommend Bernal Diaz's Historia Verdadera or, predictably, anything Milton Friedman. They will either bore you to death or make you angry.
*If you don't get the joke it's ok I will tells you, my chirruns: columbus thought that the antilles was the earthly paradise from genesis. he thought the world was shaped like a breast and the antilles was the nipple.

did anyone notice that NOTHING from my amherst class is here?
yeah that's because i hate it.
and after tomorrow i never have to sit in that goddamn class AGAIN.
this is coming from someone who loves college. i love learning, i love reading. i even love writing a paper or two.
but i do not like this class. nor do i like most of the people in it. one guy seriously said that the reason latin america has so many impoverished people is because they aren't "pulling themselves up by their bootstraps." you better believe i gave him a piece of my mind! i will defend my maria pinto ladies until the day i die. i couldn't wait to get back to scrappy, loveable mount holyoke. we love helping people there. unlike our selfish, friedman-humping neighbors up the road.

where am i? ah the library. and it's 1am. and i have another paper to write.
i should probably trek home and snuggle with my lappy in a more comfortable setting.

i hope everyone who's finals-ing it up makes it through ok. one girl in my latin american historical fiction class started crying today because she forgot that the final paper was due TODAY and not at the end of the finals period. i hope that doesn't happen to you all.

abrazos y besitos,
jaq
