Day 2

Jun 07, 2007 10:43

Well I was stuck at home all day by myself because we are sharing a car this summer. There are a few things in walking distance, but my asthma has not gotten used to the (only slightly) thinner air here, and we are having winds of up to 70 mph. There have been several occasions when i've had to grab hold of Paul for fear of falling over. I'm not even kidding. So I didn't do any exploring during the day today.

Last night we ate at Encoteque (sp?) de San Marcos in the Venetian. The menu was all in Italian and like nothing I had ever seen before, but the food was divine! Not as expensive as the VooDoo lounge, but Paul and I would have never eaten their on our own. I should preface all of my restaurant reviews with that- We're not paying. They're usually very expensive.

After that we saw Phantom- the 90 minute version- also in the Venetian. If you have seen Phantom the tour, or Phantom of the Opera on Broadway and loved it- you may be disappointed with this show. When you cut an hour, you really have to fly through the storyline, and there really wasn't enough character set-up. But this is Vegas, what do you expect? None of the shows here even have intermissions, because they're afraid that the people won't come back. There are lots of shiny things in the lobby after all.

If you haven't liked the other Phantoms, but appreciate good special effects- then this is definitely the show for you! The chandelier falls in real time. Freaked me out. I knew it was coming. I knew it was going to fall in real time, But holy shit! That's fast. The coolest part was, they went to black at exactly the right moment so that your eyes continued to make the chandelier fall, but they reset it at the top of the theatre in a matter of seconds. So when you're expecting the lights to come back on and it to be sitting almost right on top of people's heads- it's gone! A little too much use of pyro for my taste, and they always did it in blackouts, so you couldn't even enjoy it- it just blinded you. Stupid.

If you haven't liked other productions and flashiness doesn't appeal to you, then skip it.

Today I have the car, we're going to go see if Gymboree is hiring.
