How scary was buying your first house?

I've spent a lot of time looking into it this week, and while it all sounds good... it's expensive. To get into a good neighborhood (we're going beyond decent, because i want to make sure the resale value will hold up) in a decent/good house is going to cost at the very least $170,000. With interest rates at 6% and taxes at almost 4% we'd be paying 1/4 more than we're paying in rent. And that's without homeowners insurance or HOA fees or anything or whatever else costs money in a house. And that's assuming we buy the cheapest house.

It's scary, right?

If you don't mind my asking, what kind of situation were you in when you bought your first house? How scary was it and how did you get through it?

We're still at the very least 6 months away from a house, so we have plenty of time to crunch the numbers and freak out and then work it all out. But, I'm just wondering...
