I'm trying to finish up an entire release before I leave town for Dragon*Con tomorrow, but I feel I need to weigh in on LJ's latest fuckwittery.

LJ's new implementation of pingback will report links in locked posts, and will include up to 600 words of post content, including content from locked posts.

To disable pingback, go hereI would also like ( Read more... )

Thank you so much for the information. I noticed the "Repost to" checkboxes last night, and figured as long as I never log in my Facebook or Twitter account via LJ, those checkboxes are not even enabled.

But here you made me understood more about the PingBack service. It's such a double edged sword, isn't it? At one hand, I would want to know if anyone links my entry in their journal or sites; on the other hand, I agree to gave up part of my privacy too! \o/

I guess ignorance is a virtue here. *runs off to disable the pingback service*

Have fun at Dragon*Con!!!

I'm very annoyed about pingback because it is otherwise a handy feature; I had it enabled before. I almost never lock posts, but when I do, it's for a good reason, so it's annoying that actually wanting to keep my locked content locked and using pingback are two mutually exclusive things.

I know. It could be very handy in keeping track of where one's posts are linked to, but definitely not at the expense of sacrificing one's privacy. Actually I thought about this more. As long as we adhere to a self imposed rule of never link a post in a flocked or private post, I think it would be okay. So instead of linking, it's time to get in the habit of cut-and-paste I guess.

This whole thing makes me rethink of the etiquette of linking on the Internet.

I have always had pingbacks disabled, but I got a notif anyway. :-p I went back in today and selected 'disabled' AGAIN, so hopefully it will stick this time. *growls*

You mean the giant honking banner across the top of every LJ page announcing that OMG PINGBACK IS BACK and we aren't mentioning that we made it WORSE? Yes, it is hard to ignore!

I'm actually in Catch-22 hell with that banner, because I installed NoScript for Firefox after LJ decided to redirect some URLs through some sketchy third party, and the only way to close it is to temporarily enable scripting on LJ, which I don't want to do because LJ isn't trustworthy... lather, rinse, and repeat.

Oh, I saw that obnoxious banner too, but no, that's not what I meant - I got an email notification from the pingbot LJ that someone had linked to my fic journal... but supposedly the only way that should happen is if I enabled pingback in the first place for that reason, and I specifically did NOT as I didn't want to blaze an internet trail of my own, you know?

Whatevs, LJ, just fail like a faily thing. :-p
