okay, okay, i confess

so i confess that when i was seven years old my uncle bought me the box set of the chronicles of narnia and i have been obsessed since then. deal with it. and i have re-read each of them every year since then. even this year. and i do realize that i am nineteen (meaning i have read each of them at least 12 times). so deal with it. i even have a book that explains all the symbolism and references of each character, place, event, or idea in the books.
my obsession with these books is about as great as some star wars nerds, lord of the rings freaks, or harry potter lovers. (although i do love all of those as well). anyway. this christmas i am expecting a lot of narnia junk. which will be AWESOME.
and the movie was really good actually. last christmas my mom got me the dvds of the crappy british versions that i used to rent and force my cousins to watch with me when we were kids. those ones are practically word for word from the book, which is nice. and they have four of the books made into movies. but the girl who played lucy in the old ones is butt-ugly and it always annoyed the heck out of me. and she can't act very well either. and they are old so the technology for the talking animals was basically people in animal costumes. at least they made my favorite book (the voyage of the dawn treader).

so. my expert analysis of the movie:
i usually don't like when they add things into the movie that shouldn't really be there, but the beginning actually was a good idea because the first paragraph of the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe just says that the kids are sent to the country because of air raids. but its pretty unlikely that any kids today would know what that meant (maybe if they are from london though) since it is set (and was written) during WW2. at least that put the story in some context.
the girl who plays lucy is adorable.
some of the lines that were added in didn't bother me that much, although it was totally obvious for me when they did. but i realize they were trying to add some humor and other ideas to make it more appealing..
just a few off the top of my head..
*lucy never tried to shake hands with tumnus when she met him
*the books never said anything about the dad being at war
*they left out mrs beaver wanting to bring her sewing machine, and santa bringing a new one
etc.

susan got really annoying. in the books, she is supposed to be somewhat of a motherly presence, which the movie did achieve and in the last book (the last battle) we find out that she stopped believing in narnia.
but in the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe, she is initially hesitant about staying in there but that doesn't last that long. once she finds out about tumnus she is willing to stay. in the movie they dragged that on really annoyingly.

and there was some added drama for sure for audience appeal...
*escaping the beavers dam through a little tunnel and being that close to the wolves is not how the original story occurred and they didn't find the fox like that
what was supposed to happen was that edmund was riding with the white witch and she sees a group of animals having a little christmas celebration (including the fox and the badger) which is where we first hear of santa's arrival and then she turns THEM into stone and this is where Edmund REALLY begins to feel sorry.
*the whole iced over lake thing was not in the text. at first it kind of bothered me because it seemed like the wolf was going to die from the waterfall which would have left out one of the key events in the book, when peter rescued susan by killing it with his sword. but they incorporated it later so it wasn't that bad.

overall.. i still really liked it because i think they made the characters true to c.s.lewis's intentions and it was visually appealing. not to mention the battle scene was the best rendition of it that i have seen AND it included all the main parts of the original battle (edmund broke the wand and is injured, aslan kills the witch, lucy uses her cordial)

so yay. apparently they are going to make the next two books into movies as well, and since they are going by the order they are written and not the chronological order of the story (they were written out of order but this is a good idea because the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe is the most popular and people would like it more) which means they are making prince caspian and THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER!!! yayyyyy!

okay im done.

and my dad came home today!
