Prompt: Barrel

Mar 01, 2014 18:16

The air was close and warm, smelling of earth, stale water and plastic. She panted fearfully as she heard giggling and running feet nearby, it echoed horribly and she clamped her hand over her mouth to muffle the sound. She closed her eyes in the darkness, silently wishing for the searchers to move on. She heard the dry rustle of their shoes on the dead lawn around her. Farther then closer then away again, hunting her. She looked up, straining at the circle of sky above her rimmed with the edge of the barrels lip.

She was the only one left.

The voices and feet came running past the her hiding spot, then sped off to the left getting farther away again, fading into quiet. She waited a few heartbeats before daring to slowing uncurl her legs and push herself up to just look over the edge of the barrel.

"FOUND YOU!" screamed her brother as he popped up from the base.

She ducked back into the barrel as he began pushing at it, her sister ran up and gave it a helpful shove. She landed with a jarring 'Gadung' sound from the barrel and screeched as they began spinning the barrel. She was going down the hill.

With a shove it and she bounced down the small hill beside the house. She tumbled about the inside, rolling with it and laughing, qickly coming to stop against the barbed wire fence. Gasping and giggling she climbed out as her siblings came running down the hill after her.

"You're it." said her sister.

"Well then hide while I'm still too dizzy to see straight." she answered, wobbling about the barrel drunkenly.

Laughing they ran off, while she began counting.
