There are days when he’s so pretty it hurts, and days where she’s beyond caring. She knows exactly who he is, what he can do; what he’s capable of doing to her.

There are days when he smiles and she knows that whatever he asks of her is worth whatever sacrifice she has to make to help him, and whether it’s her time or her blood, it won’t matter. She knows that he is kind and caring, that he wants to help people more than anyone in the world, and he will especially do anything for the people he loves.

She knows that he loves her, but there are days she wishes it was in an entirely different way; a way she’s wished for almost every day since she was thirteen years old. Twenty-one is a hell of a long way from thirteen, but when it comes to him she’s never changed. She fears she will never change the way she feels about him, because there’s never been anything she can do to control it, and she doesn’t expect to be able to stop it now.

There are days he looks at her, or makes a snide comment in regards to her relationship, such as it is, with Jimmy Olsen, and something inside of her stirs. Something that feels like hope. She knows she’s never wanted anyone but him, but at least she has taken a chance and valiantly tried to move on. Sometimes the resolve tries to crumble in his presence, but she won’t let it. She’ll hold it together with her trusty staple gun and Elmer’s glue if that’s all she has, but if she falters, if he pries all the way into her heart again, it will all be over. She’ll never stop trusting him with her life, yet her heart is another matter altogether.

Then the day comes when she has no choice. She never thought she would live to see it, but when he pulls her into his arms of his own free will and kisses her until she can barely breathe, she knows she’s been fighting a battle she could never hope to win. When he looks her in the eye and tells her what she’s wanted to hear ever since she was nothing but a very forward journalism geek, she realizes she’s known it all along.

This is a fight she cannot win, and she knows she’s going to give in even before she has said the words. She buries her face in his chest and as he holds her to him, she doesn’t know if this is real or just another of her crazy dreams, but she’s willing to take another chance; a chance that could last forever and is not the masquerade on which she has based the last eight years of her life.

There are days when she wonders how she ever got what she truly wanted in life, but never a single one where she regrets the wait. What he is to her and the things he does to make it up to her every day was worth all of the pain. They know they will never waste another day.
