my life is brilliant

Today at school the students had physicals and one of the other teachers and I were in charge of measuring their height. I remember having to get tested like this every year for sports and the most dreaded test was always the weight test. Just as my students asked the nurse to be very discreet and whisper their weight, I too would do anything short of hiding the paper down my shirt to prevent other people from seeing it. It's amazing how simple numbers like those define who we are or who we think we are.

Then, there were the short girls who kept asking me "Are you sure that is right?" looking at the height ruler disappointed.
"Yes, Im sure this is right. Stand flat on your feet." "Yes, you have to take your socks off." "Maybe next year you will make it to 150 centimeters. You can do it!"

Then, the taller girls would tease the shorter girls and the shorter girls would use come backs like "Well I have grown 2 centimeters in the last year!" I remember at their age taunting my friend Becca with short jokes and her comebacks always sounded just like those.
