Lee looked in the clear river once again, seeing his distorted reflection in the water. As the rushing water started to still in his vision and he was given a clear view of himself, he frowned and splashed at the water. Rinsing off his sweaty face with the fresh water, Lee closed his eyes and tried to ignore what he just saw.
The leaf-nin stood up from his crouched position and walked back to the hour glass figure that was his tree stump. Glancing to the jumprope next to it, Lee shook his head of his earlier thoughts and started kicking the tree stump. Setting his goal for two hundred kicks, he felt sure about being able to meet his goal and began to count.
"Thirteen, fourteen, fifteen," he continued to count. Even though he concentrated only on the wood in front of him and ignored the thoughts jumping in his head, he missed a number in his counting.
Sweat was drenching his face an hour later and disappearing into his green spandex. Determination fired in his eyes but resignation fazed in and out. Thoughts jumbled in his filter-web as he desperately tried to keep himself focused on the task at hand. It only took one image flashing behind his eyes to make him start.
"One hundred eighty-seven..." Lee's kicking came to a halt as his hands reached for the stump and his head fell back to look at the sky. Faces flashed through his mind which only helped to dissolve his pleasant mood more. He looked back to the slender wood as his fingers stressed on the stump. Something akin to aggresion pulsed through his blood, which was somewhat unusual to him.
For the most part, Lee was the type of guy to wear his heart on his sleeve. He was an honest and warm-hearted guy, unless he was being serious. He didn't feel so good right now, though. He finally let himself see the truth he hid from himself. And he could do nothing but agree with himself.
Before he could even register his actions, he had walked away from the trunk and was staring back down at the rushing water. No, the reflection did not talk to him and no, he did not see a new person in the water. He saw himself. His plain, old, unappealing self. He ignored the stinging behind his eyes that was blurring his vision and stared angrily at the distorted sight he saw in the water. Unattractive, bushy eyebrows that he only shared with his teacher; terrible, bowl-style hair-cut that was stolen from his role model; unattractive, bright green spandex that was given to him by someone close to him. He was ugly beyond comparison, but he was the spitting image of his teacher, and he knew it. No one saw what Lee saw though.
He had no skills other than taijutsu and he had no charms or good looks. He wasn't like Sasuke Uchiha, who all the girls fawned over like crazy. He wasn't like Neji whose collected and stoic persona caught every girl's eye. He knew this was true -- he had always known. He was unsuccesful, by anyone's standards, whom no one liked because he could never be a good enough ninja without ninjutsu or genjutsu. He wasn't easily accepted, partly because of his unappealling looks and his bad habit to flirt outrageously. And no one ever got to know him and like him because no one ever wanted to get close to him or be known as someone acquainted with him.
He was just a flat-out loser to them.
Lee had understood this since the beginning of his ninja schooling. He knew because of his lack of (typically) mandatory skills he would not be someone people would jump to become friends with. He understood it, yet he brushed the negative thoughts aside and hoped to find friends who could simply enjoy his company like friends were to do. And, in a way, he had gotten that, which he was grateful for.
When Lee had become a part of Gai's genin team he was adopted by a fatherly figure that loved him, a friend that cherish him, and a rival that stood by him. He was thankful more than anything for that. He had forgotten about his disliked appearance and his unusual talents -- or lack thereof. The second he had laid eyes on his pink-haired beauty and rejected though, he was instantly reminded of his place in the close-minded world.
And, while he had overcome that and healed, he had never forgotten that one-time lapse.
Other times, other crushes, he blamed the girls for not just getting to know him. This time, though, he had fallen for Sakura Haruno. From her stunning looks to her fiery personality, Lee couldn't like her any less. And even through the rejection, it wasn't his fault. He knew he was too direct, and he knew he wasn't the most attractive ninja, but he was honest and kept his word. And in the end he was granted her friendship. It was a bond that would never be something more. At first he figured if that was the best he was going to be given, and he would deal with it. Something with her was better than nothing.
But as his beady eyes stared down from under bushy brows to the riveting water, he knew what everyone else saw of him would not change. He was an eyesore to them. Never before had he even thought about giving up his determination, but at that exact second the thought passed through his mind. He had finally seen himself as what he was truly mistaken for and there was nothing he could do to turn it away.
He was ugly.
He was untalented.
He was unimpressive.
He was nothing.
By their standards.
Pulling his eyes away from the revolating view, Lee sighed against the fresh air and wondered if he'd ever be seen as someone important by these people. His teacher had always told him he had skills for being a taijutsu master and he had always prided himself in showing his teammates he could make it in the ninja world. Right now, he knew he would be defending his skills for as long as he must, and he was ready. And finally, everything clicked in his head. Every bad thought and every good thought that had passed through his mind finally made sense.
Lee lifted himself from his crouched position and looked down at the rippling water one last time. Relaxing his stressed hands, the ebony-haired male turned away from the body of water and walked away. He didn't know where he was going or what he was going to do there. But he'd figure that out on the way.
End.
