Ever spent hours trying to solve something that when you finally figure it out, turns out to be a 5 minute job that was your own fault anyway? That's me this evening.
Got sick of having a phone extension cable trailing along the hall so I finally decided to put in a junction box and extra phone socket that I bought about 4 months ago. During the time my adsl router was powered off while doing this it lost it's settings, so when I was ready to set it back up I powered up, tried to get onto it's setup page and got nothing. after half an hour I tries to telnet onto it and again got nothing. I knew I had the right IP since the router acts as my dchp server, which was sorking fine yet I couldn't get onto the damn thing.
3 hours later the lightbulb in my head hits 400 watts. Totally forgot I installed my current firewall after I'd already got the router and didn't think about opening it up for the routers control page - and obviously I blocked telnet straight away.
Thats one sunday evening totally wasted.
I would be soooo embarrassed if I did something like this at work.
