Woke up late on purpose (trying to maximize my sleep) and missed the earlier train by a mere "I didn't feel like running this morning". I'm actually amazed I even had the chance to see the earlier train given that I left seven minutes later than I did yesterday.
Traffic was weird this morning in that there were many gaps that I saw and just took advantage of. Everyone in the right lane? Switch to the left lane. Guy moves over, he probably is about to turn, avoid being behind him. I normally drive this way. I try to anticipate what everyone else on the road is doing so that I can 'make my move'. It's kind of a little game, but helps me focus on the road and sometimes gets me places quicker than it would normally. I don't cut off people and won't take advantage of a space if someone else will need to use their brakes. I like being able to flow through traffic and not cause an artificial jam. I'm going to call this opportunistic driving although a quick Google search shows that this term is completely made up as of this post and the closest thing is an IEEE article that refers to an infotainment system that pays attention to the driver.
The day started alright with essentially everyone being a little zany throughout the day. I really enjoy this aspect of the team I'm on, everyone has their own little humor that makes the workday enjoyable. I've never left thinking 'I'm glad to be leaving'. We had a retrospective meeting and a few discussions of various topics. Overall I found the day to be very productive and although I didn't accomplish everything I wanted to, I think the groundwork for the next sprint is there enough that it will be an even better sprint than this past one.
I met with the Pocketwatch team at the Palmer House to discuss some things and record a short clip about us. Then I raced to Union Station to catch the next train out to Joliet.
Unbeknownst to me, Josh had tried to call/text me several times while I was racing the clock. I had just made it on the train, sat down, pulled out my cell phone, train begins to move, and I read the text 'Take regular train to Downers Grove' among others and notifications of missed calls. I immediately text him back and we have a lovely text conversation as I was simply out of breath from all the sprinting to the train station in the shitty weather.
As it turns out, Josh's car had still not arrived due to an accident in northern IL that prevented the trailer from making the several stops it needed to on time before arriving at our Dodge dealer. So Josh was upset. He had to pick me up from Lemont, drive me to my car in Downer's Grove and then we both drove home. The purpose of taking the Joliet train was that the Joliet stop isn't too far from the dealer, and we could sign all the paperwork and get everything done before the dealer closed.
We got home and just decompressed for a little bit before deciding on dinner. I went to the store to get some ingredients for making pizzas and a movie. We made pizzas, I made a pineapple cheese pizza and Josh made a cheese pizza. I cut them up when they were ready and did a complete injustice to pizza makers everywhere. The pizza slices were all unique sizes and the cuts weren't all the way through such that the word slice really meant something that was circular on one edge and then jagged edges where all the cutting happened. the ingredients of pizza were there, but anyone else looking at it would probably ask 'What's that thing that has the same ingredients as pizza?'.
We enjoyed it nonetheless and watched the new episode of The Big Bang Theory. Josh was just wiped out from work and everything else today and wasn't about to be able to watch the movie.
We went to bed and I stayed up a little later reading a book.
I think life presents many opportunities and often we can get so wrapped up in 'hoping for the best' that we forget that life has no promises. It's best to remain optimistic and work for something that you never know what it may lead to, but as long as you enjoy the work on your way there and as long as you are happy, life itself is an opportunity that won't pass you by.

Just another day at the office.
