Night 52: F-A Block Hallway

Oct 12, 2010 06:16

[From here]It was surprising to see that no one else had left yet. All the doors were closed as she walked down her block and into the hallway on her left, though she could clearly hear a few voices here and there, probably talking with their fellow roommate. While she would never admit it openly, being the only one in the hallway was rather creepy ( Read more... )

From the confident strides Rita took through the hallways, one might have thought she was fearless. In some ways, she was. She knew she couldn't allow things like fear or uncertainty keep her from moving straight toward her goals.

And on the other hand, a confident walk could make a person safer in some ways. Enemies tended to go for the easy pickings; that was common sense. If Rita didn't appear to be easy to catch or intimidate, the monsters would go after someone else. At least... that was normal monster behavior. Here, Rita knew to expect the worst.

Despite her somewhat hasty pace, the mage kept a sharp eye out for signs of movement in the darkness ahead as she proceeded into the next hall.

The halls still seemed relatively empty when Elle made her way out. It felt a little unsettling. Or a lot unsettling. Being alone made things worse. If any monsters, human or non, wanted a target, all they had to do was make a run for her.

At least there was a relatively remote possibility of Sylar being in the part of the asylum designated to girls.

Before heading out into the main hall, she hesitated and looked around. As much as she hated Claire Bennet, she almost wanted to find her again. She was reliable in a jam. Maybe if she waited long enough, Claire would come out ...

[Waiting for Yukari!]

Flashlight in hand, Yukari could at least see what was around her as she walked, but that didn't mean she wasn't going to take slow steps. So far so good, and nothing was out of the ordinary (aside from what was already abnormal), even if it was a little eerie being in a hospital's halls while they're all pitch dark. She couldn't see any light up ahead, either; was the whole place like this?

The further out of her room she went, the more people she noticed going to and fro; a few had already been loitering around, as if waiting for something. Waiting for what? Yukari began to question what everyone had been out here for, and then slowly came to the conclusion that she had no idea what she was doing out here, either.

... Right, for answers, maybe?

She wasn't sure how trustworthy anyone else would be, considering her last two attempts ended far from successfully, but Yukari looked around anyway for someone who didn't look particularly busy ( ... )

Elle turned sharply at the sound of someone trying to get her attention. It wasn't a voice she immediately recognized, but when she turned, her eyebrows raised in surprise at the face. She remembered this girl. She was the one who gave her the 411 on the institute when she first arrived. The girl's name escaped her, but she had been fun.

"Right now? I'm busy trying not to get eaten by a giant spider thing." Her tone was deadpan. No, she wasn't particularly busy, but how dumb would it sound if she said she was just loitering in a dark hallway in the middle of the night? The thought made her wonder if anyone else was doing the exact same thing.

"What about you?" A smile quirked at the corners of her lips. She was trying her best to be friendly. "On the look-out for something?"

Spiders. Right. Yukari didn't make any sort of response to the obvious joke, realizing herself that she wasn't really up to going along to any sort of humor right then. At the same time, though, she didn't want to make an equally deadpanned response, so Yukari simply opened her mouth for a moment before quickly shutting it as if she didn't know what to say-- nevermind she didn't actually know how to respond to that, but fortunately enough she did know how to answer the following question.

"Yeah, kind of," she responded, taking a quick glance further down the hallway before continuing on, speaking slowly; "What's going on here? I'd ask why all the lights are off, but I'm wondering more about why everyone's able to come out into the halls like this all of a sudden."

( ...)

"And it was apparently hiding in the room when we were there," she continued, frowning. "We first went into the room and none of us saw it ... but I guess we just ... didn't ... look well enough."

Seriously. Venom had been watching the door, and her and Edward had looked around the room with everyone else, but they hadn't seen anything.

"What about you?" Bella continued, turning to look towards Claire. "What did you do last night?" a pause, and she smiled. "And how many Peters do you know? I remember you talking about bumping into another Peter ... and now your - Uncle?" she asked, seeing if she was right before continuing. "Is named Peter too. How do you keep them in check?"

The mention of the tentacles and the monster's apparent ability to hide made Claire's forehead crease with concern. Not only did it sound dangerous, but it sounded disgusting. Less disturbing than the mirror monster, without a doubt, but freaky in its own right ( ... )

"Smart," Bella nodded, a grin crossing her face. Considering what they were planning on doing, she was in extremely well spirits. Everything was going to be okay, and Edward was going to be back to normal and uninjured. She couldn't even think that it wouldn't work, that things were going to go wrong. She couldn't.

At the mention of the people being experimented on, the teenager's good mood slightly dropped, and her grin fell into a frown. "I see," she whispered, thinking. "Still, that's a nice thing to try and do. I wonder what happens to the patients that are taken ..."

It was scary to think about. Were they actually experimented on? And if so, to what degree?

"Oh, and I'm fine," she added as an after thought, turning to give Claire a reassuring smile. "Just a bruise, but that's it. Nothing I can't live through, I mean. I may look not that strong, but I've been through a lot. I can take it."

"Peter -- my uncle, not the younger one -- he told me that one of his friends got something injected into his neck, or something like that. He had really bad burns on his face, too, but Peter said that was from before he came to the institute." There was a certain degree of uncertainty in her explanation, but the burns weren't the important part. "Either way, it's not good, I can tell you that much. The girl we met last night seemed pretty rattled by it."

Pretty rattled was an understatement. Claire knew the look on Soma's face, she knew the hollow pain and the feeling of invasion and the way it had shaken her to her core and gotten under her skin. Physical experiments would probably be easier to come back from. She pushed the door open into the south hall and headed through, holding it for Bella.

The hallway was scarcely populated; a few young women were chatting or waiting. Neither of which Lana had time for. She strode onwards before her resolve could falter.

The night was still young, which meant Erika wasn't going to find anyone to rope into coming with her here. The detective wasn't stupid, after all; even with the weapon she had, she had no delusions of being a fierce warrior. Her specialty was fights of logic, which meant she had to leave the brawn to someone else.

A meat shield was fine too.
