Night 52: F-A Block Hallway

Oct 12, 2010 06:16

[From here]It was surprising to see that no one else had left yet. All the doors were closed as she walked down her block and into the hallway on her left, though she could clearly hear a few voices here and there, probably talking with their fellow roommate. While she would never admit it openly, being the only one in the hallway was rather creepy ( Read more... )

The mention of the tentacles and the monster's apparent ability to hide made Claire's forehead crease with concern. Not only did it sound dangerous, but it sounded disgusting. Less disturbing than the mirror monster, without a doubt, but freaky in its own right.

"I just think of one of them as little Peter. I mean, he's around my age, but my uncle's like … twenty-something. It's more confusing to talk about them, though, now that I think about it," she explained quickly. Of course, there had been pretty clear context for the most part, but without it, Claire realized there were probably going to be some awkward issues courtesy of the name confusion.

"Anyway, we tried to test my blood out -- on the people who were getting experimented on upstairs. But, none of them were actually injured. I guess Landel just wanted to screw with their heads." He always seemed to like that better, anyway. Her expression became concerned again, though, and she reached out to put a hand on Bella's arm. "You're okay now, though, right? I mean, you got hit too, tell me you haven't just been worrying about Edward all this time."

"Smart," Bella nodded, a grin crossing her face. Considering what they were planning on doing, she was in extremely well spirits. Everything was going to be okay, and Edward was going to be back to normal and uninjured. She couldn't even think that it wouldn't work, that things were going to go wrong. She couldn't.

At the mention of the people being experimented on, the teenager's good mood slightly dropped, and her grin fell into a frown. "I see," she whispered, thinking. "Still, that's a nice thing to try and do. I wonder what happens to the patients that are taken ..."

It was scary to think about. Were they actually experimented on? And if so, to what degree?

"Oh, and I'm fine," she added as an after thought, turning to give Claire a reassuring smile. "Just a bruise, but that's it. Nothing I can't live through, I mean. I may look not that strong, but I've been through a lot. I can take it."

"Peter -- my uncle, not the younger one -- he told me that one of his friends got something injected into his neck, or something like that. He had really bad burns on his face, too, but Peter said that was from before he came to the institute." There was a certain degree of uncertainty in her explanation, but the burns weren't the important part. "Either way, it's not good, I can tell you that much. The girl we met last night seemed pretty rattled by it."

Pretty rattled was an understatement. Claire knew the look on Soma's face, she knew the hollow pain and the feeling of invasion and the way it had shaken her to her core and gotten under her skin. Physical experiments would probably be easier to come back from. She pushed the door open into the south hall and headed through, holding it for Bella.
