Day 49: Intercom, Early Afternoon

Apr 27, 2010 05:27

The Head Doctor's soaked appearance seemed so palpable through his voice that a practiced listener could nearly see his soggy coat and his matted-down hair.

Unfortunately, most patients currently in the Institute were not practiced at all, so they probably only garnered some minor annoyance in his tone as he sighed and slapped a wet-sounding sleeve against his desktop.

"Hello, again, everyone. I apologize for the brief break, but it seems our maintenance team was confused about whether to redirect the rain flow out of the Institute or into it. Hmph. Fortunately, we do have Head Nurse Lydia around, and she is, after all, very reliable."

He paused for a moment and chuckled before continuing:

"Anyway, I'm afraid our unorthodox schedule must continue! Normally, you see, we'd have everyone move to the cafeteria to lunch, but as there are so few of us, I believe something more fun is in order, ah? Yes, yes - in fact, the nurses will be escorting you to our Arts & Crafts Room, and once you arrive there, you will find that our cafeteria staff have set up a table with some wonderful sandwiches and assorted snacks. Ham and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, tuna and relish, salami and mayo - mmm! And you may have them with potato chips, garden salad, or granola bars. To drink, they'll have a water pitcher and some individual milk cartons and apple juice boxes.

"Certainly nothing to sneeze at, I hope! You will be allowed to work and eat, but, of course, any messes might cause you to lose those privileges! We do try to run a tight ship here after all!"

Something seemed to drip from his hair to his desk. He grumbled something and finished:

"Er - I believe that's all for now. Toodle-oo!"

The intercom clicked off.
