Day 48: Cafeteria (Breakfast)

Luckily for Mele, the night had ended before Tenzen had changed his mind and deemed Mele appropriate for target practice. Even if the situation of who was mocking who had seemed to change into the Iga ninja's favor. Despite her behavior, perhaps the insolent woman could serve some sort of use nonetheless. The cuts on his leg were healing well, which was at least one good thing. The nurse said the stitches were out of them now, which just confused him. Did they really just sew wounds shut here like they were a tear in a uniform, as a first resort? It so... prehistoric.

He took a tray of food and sat down, for once eating without much enthusiasm, running a hand through his hair. He hadn't done enough last night. He'd done a bit of patrolling once Xigbar left, but he'd just...

He sighed, cursing himself for being lax. He should have done more. He could always be doing more.

Soma awoke with her teeth still clenched and her body tense, clutching the gun so tightly in her hands she thought it might break.

She'd never killed anyone before. If what the red-haired man had said was true, she still hadn't. But she'd come so close--they'd all come so close. She didn't regret it in the slightest, and yet...

She had to check on her friends and make sure they were all right. Senna and Meche had been injured, as far as she could tell last night, but their wounds hadn't been life-threatening. Alita, though--she would need to ask her nurse about Alita. She had no doubt her friend had survived, but the princess was almost certainly going to be in considerable discomfort today.

Soma filled her tray without paying much attention to what she'd put on it and found an empty seat next to a man with posture as good as her own. Offering a slight nod of acknowledgment, she sat down and began to eat.

622 looked up from his food, blinking slightly in surprise. The person next to him almost looked Arkanian, not human. He gave an answering nod, sitting quietly for a few moments before curiosity (and possibly a growing sense of how to actually be social) got the better of him.

"I don't think we've met before. Stormtrooper Sergeant TK-622," he introduced himself, extending a hand politely. Well, as politely as he could with his next question. "Forgive me for asking, ma'am, but are you human? I've never seen humans with your hair and eye color."

"Stormtrooper" was an unfamiliar title, but "Sergeant" was clear enough. For once, another soldier--although his designation was an interesting one, and one that reminded her of the Human Enhancement Agency. It was probably a coincidence--nothing about him appeared anything like the supersoldiers she had known--but it was an interesting observation nonetheless.

She returned the handshake as firmly as she could, managing not to wince at the stab of pain that ensued. Apparently she'd been right--last night's adventure had cracked a rib or two--but there was no need to let that show. "Second Lieutenant Soma Peries."

Sergeant TK-622's question didn't particularly offend her; she'd grown used to the stares in the barracks on her own world. As far as she was concerned, it was something to be proud of. "There's no need to apologize. I'm a genetically engineered human; my hair and eye color aren't usual where I'm from. It's a sign of my status as a supersoldier."

Oh good. Someone military. That was a relief, really. "Pleasure to meet you, Lieutenant," he replied. Now he knew where he fit in, rank-wise at least. He had no clue how the 'supersoldier' thing changed matters, if at all. Genetic modification wasn't all that odd a concept to him, though.

"The clone line I'm from was slightly modified as well." Made easier to condition and increase unit cohesion was what he was told. It had been part of what had made him wonder before whether he was 'defective' on his last day on the Death Star, that he'd disobeyed an order. He still felt it regularly, simply because he had no orders to follow.

Soma leaned in slightly, her breakfast forgotten in her sudden interest. It wasn't as if she was hungry anyway.

"You're a clone, then? Is that common where you're from?" It certainly explained the name he'd given. In any case, he hadn't asked about genetic engineering and he'd mentioned cloning, so it was probably safe to assume he was from a world not too different from her own.

622 nodded. "Only the Empire does it, really, but there are a lot of clones in the Corps." Too few, in his opinion, the recruits didn't have the same sort of background and training as a clone.

"Why do you ask?"

An Empire. That was an odd name, one that Soma associated with times long gone. She wondered how large it was; it had to be large, with a name like that. Did it span nations? Continents? The entire world?

"Mostly curiosity on my part," she admitted. "We don't have any cloning programs in my world, but I suppose it would make sense to do so for an army." The HEA had probably been advancing in that direction before it was destroyed. Why change a winning combination?

"For the number of systems that are protected it's not actually enough, but clones are only taken from the best. I'm part of the original line myself." It was at least comforting to know that people exactly like him had already won a massive galactic-scale war in the past, but... well. What he'd heard while here still bothered him like nothing else. It used to be that it was inconceivable for him that the Empire could even have any failings, let alone be defeated, but now he wasn't sure if it could fully stave off the Rebellion's corruption.

Soma nodded slightly. Nothing unusual there, then. Except for that word he had mentioned--it only held any real meaning for her in a technological sense, but that didn't exactly fit in this context.

"What do you mean by systems?" Asking this many questions probably seemed unprofessional, but the colonel had always made it a point to ask her questions and welcome them in return. Besides, this place had changed her--that much was undeniable.

"Star systems. Are you from Earth, then?" Most people here who were planetbound seemed to be from there, so he didn't think it was too presumptuous to ask.

"I am. Space travel is limited to the solar system in my world. I take it you aren't from Earth?"

She was sure that would change soon; the GN drives provided potential she could barely even begin to imagine. Still, the concept of humans populating entire star systems was still hard to grasp.

Farther along than most he'd met who said they were from Earth. That at least was interesting. "I'm not. I suppose my home planet is Kamino, but it's not exactly an identifying factor for me. I was made and trained there, but I've served on other planets." Really, if you wanted to give him some sort of parochial identifier, then picking his batch number or the building he was trained in would be more accurate.

Soma nodded at that. "I'm not technically from Earth, in that case; I'm currently stationed in Russia, but I was created in a space colony."

She was quiet for a moment, pausing to take a quick drink of water, before she came up with another round of questions: "What's your home planet like? How far away is it from Earth?"

622 supposed that would mean something to him if he had any clue what the regions of this planet were like. He'd heard the consensus was that they were currently in an area called 'America', but it wasn't really all that relevant, as far as he was concerned.

He took the moment of silence to wolf down a good portion of his food, although just a little slower than usual. The only time meals had ever been disrupted was the riot and people always looked at him funny when he ate at normal speed, so he was learning to slow down. "I really only saw the inside of the training facilities, so all I can tell you is that it had really white walls. And I don't know where Earth is in relation to everything else in the galaxy, so I can't really give you an answer."

Another nod from Soma. She knew what that was like; the walls of the Human Enhancement Agency were all she'd seen of L'Internationale before she'd left, though she'd been told an entire city existed to support the scientists who'd worked there.

"I suppose that many star systems would make it difficult to keep track of the location of one small planet."
