Nightshift 44: M-C Block Hallway

[From here.]As expected, the next hall was just as dark as the last, but Sync didn't bother to waste any time just loitering around. Following the same idea as last time, the God-General kept close to the wall, using his memory to lead himself across with little effort ( Read more... )

The infection from his wound had lessened compared to last night, but it had still returned by the time the doors had unlocked. Tenzen was almost thankful that this hallway was completely deserted; this way he would not have to fight the temptation of lowering himself to those rotting corpses. He could only hope the reversal of the infection would continue as night passed.

He silently continued to move through the main hallway until he reached the door.

This section of the institute was no different from the one his own room was in, according to the map he'd copied. The familiarity was somewhat comforting at least, one small thing to be thankful for. He was not looking forward to facing Albedo again. In fact, the thought of even looking at the child's face was enough to get him irritated. But he would have to try and keep his calm this time. Maintain a professional detatchment toward whatever might happen so he didn't make any more stupid or embarrassing mistakes.

Where Klavier was headed was likely the meeting area for all three of the brothers as well as himself. He wasn't quite sure if only a random room had been chosen for safety's sake or if it was actually one of theirs. He trusted Nigredo was smart enough not to send the man to Albedo's room, so he wasn't actually all that worried about facing that one immediately.

One more hall to go--this route was growing familiar to Lockon now. He quickened his pace again almost to a run, momentarily forgetting that he shared the halls with others as well and needed to be wary of running into them. What mattered was that in a few minutes, he and Allelujah could go and protect Setsuna and Feldt, and the four of them together could face the night.

(But what if he were offered another chance to find weapons--the thought came into his mind that he'd have to take it. Setsuna would protect Feldt if he had to, and Allelujah had proven himself capable enough. Lockon was useless during the night if he could not find something to protect himself with.)

Turning the corner far in excess of what could be considered a safe velocity, the rattling of the hand truck's wheels and the headlight-like beam of the flashlight taped to Sho's arm was the only warning Lockon had before the frenetic mathematician came crashing into him, sending them both sprawling on the floor like some kind of interpersonal traffic accident.

"Ow, what the factor!" exclaimed the Reaper as he flailed around on the ground, trying to untangle himself from the extraneous set of limbs he'd seemed to acquired in the crash. Oh, wait, those were someone else's.

Fortunately, Lockon had pretty good reflexes. One had to, in order to be a Gundam Meister. He wasn't exactly a Gundam Meister anymore, but he still had enough of that spark to dive most of the way out of the way when Sho came zooming around the corner.

Most of the way. It wasn't enough. Just one shoe caught in the path of that cart meant that he went tumbling--and sure enough, he ended up on the floor with Sho.

"Well," he said as he finally righted himself, "maybe you speed, but at least you don't swear." It was a rather poor attempt at a joke.

The joke, like many others, flew right over Sho's head. He was more concerned with getting back onto his feet.

Shovel? Check. Flashlight? Still attached and working. Hand truck? More or less in working order. That just left...

"My megaphone!" he shouted suddenly, remembering that it was stuff in his jacket, not exactly an impact-free zone. "I swear to googol, if it's broken-!"

Pulling out the infernal contraption made of intercom and radio wired together, the Reaper clicked it on. Nothing. On, then off, then on again. He gave it a shake. He applied force by way of his open palm. Finally, after fiddling with the wires, the dim crackle of faint static filled the air. Grinning triumphantly, he brought the amplifier up to his mouth as he faced the offender.

"Ha!" he shouted, louder than was necessary, especially with the makeshift megaphone.

Sakura crept into the relative safety of the dormitory block, though she still used caution as she counted hallways in the dark. It wasn't a familiar section, but she was pretty good at reading maps. So long as the numbering system was correct, M105 shouldn't be far.

"Sakura."

Sai caught sight of pink hair as he turned the corner. Good. He hadn't missed her, and it didn't look like he'd kept her waiting either. Then again, it was possible she hadn't even taken care of her own business yet. If that was the case, did he wait here or did he follow?

Sakura was about to dart down the hallway when she heard Sai's voice. She hesitated. Dammit, was she that slow already? And here she thought she'd gotten a good start! How was Sai so fast?

"Hey. I'm supposed to heal someone in M105. Are you done already? You can come with me if you want."

[ From here. Hi guys!]

Kakashi finally slowed once they reached the hall, and thankfully saw a pair of familiar figures in the darkness. He didn't bother with any of his usual off-putting demeanor this time as he approached; there was nothing cheerful or lighthearted about the situation, and the jounin refused to pretend there was. The only thing they could do was hope to get there in time to make a difference, whether it be to stop the experiment, or ensure Shikamaru wasn't alone for any longer than necessary.

"Sai, Sakura." That Naruto wasn't yet there didn't bode well, particularly not after he hadn't answered Sakura's bulletin. Hopefully the third ninja would show up before they made it too far, or at least run into them on the way. "Shikamaru's been taken. We need to head upstairs."

Scourge very gently closed the door behind him, silent as a glitchmouse--numbers guy was making noise again, wasn't he? Great. At least he would probably distract everyone from Scourge's more clandestine activities, it was hard not to focus on him unless you were a trained tracker of the utmost skill as Scourge was.

Two of the corridors seemed to be occupied, either in rooms or with participants, but the middle one seemed to be safe. Scourge kept to the shadows, avoided crazy numbers guy, and slipped around the corner into the next hallway.
