Nightshift 43: Cafeteria

[From here.]In Sync's eyes there was no such thing as falling 'gracefully', especially when it was face first onto the floor after a rather sloppy escape. The teen had fallen several feet from the door, having used a burst of strength to at least pull himself as far away from the last room as possible ( Read more... )

That was completely unnecessary on all accounts. 1) he preferred to not have paintings thrown at his head. 2) he could protect himself and would have been just fine dodging out of the way like a sane person. In fact, he had just done that before Arlene was needlessly flashy (impressive, but still needless) and jumped in to take care of the problem like he was a child and couldn't do it himself. He was perfectly capable of handling the situation and if they were making an attempt to see what use he was, they could have left it to him instead of acting as though he needed someone to hold his hand. He had had enough of that with Millia and, frankly, having them doing the same thing was not going to win him over.

There wasn't anything to say as he followed them into the cafeteria, head lowered. It was a wordless apology for being spotted (they had almost gotten out unseen if it wasn't for him); he didn't need to voice it. As it was, the intercom was only growing louder and becoming a powerful distraction. He tried to push it away, tried to ignore how much it felt like someone was watching him, and carry on with the mission. Something this silly and mundane wasn't going to deter him when he now had even more to prove, but... He felt himself freezing in place without thinking much of it, a mix of paranoia and gullible curiosity setting in. The Guild Head peered to the side, keeping as still as possible in an effort to appear completely nonplussed with the situation.

In front of a nearby door stood a man, blond hair tangled and disheveled and draping over his torn uniform. He was pale, deathly so, his eyes obscured not with a blindfold, but with his bangs. His mouth opened like he wanted to say something, but just as quickly as Venom had spotted him, he vanished. But he was there. He was there! Just for a moment, just a second, but there was no mistaking it. He... Master Zato!

It wasn't smart to be chasing after ghosts in a place like this, but at the moment, he didn't care. The rest of the world faded out of focus as he felt his legs carrying him off and out of the cafeteria, following his master to wherever he went with undying loyalty.

That door these two were looking for and what was behind it was suddenly the least important thing on his mind.

[Which was over here. ADVENTURE HO]

Beatrix would have been lying if she claimed she hadn't been catching glimpses of both Bill and O-Ren out of the corner of her eyes since they entered the cafeteria. The difference was, she knew those two were dead having killed them herself. Out of all the murders she'd committed, those were the only two that ever revisited her mind - one her lover and BB's father and the other her best friend. Still, they were dead and she wasn't about to go chasing after ghosts.

Apparently Venom thought otherwise, or so the Bride assumed given the way he wandered off as if chasing something.

Standing on the table, she watched Venom exit without a word. She might not have had ice abilities like SubZero, but that didn't mean she was incapable of presenting an icy aura. Beatrix was rather angry and she drew her sword, eyes locked on the man's back until the door shut behind him. In the end, the only reason she did not move to cut the man down was she felt that right did not belong to her, but to SubZero, just like Ophelia's head belonged to her.

"Do you know which room is HK's? I would like to go remove Lockdown's genitalia," she said in a deadly calm voice, "unless an easy hostage presents itself real soon."

SubZero had been irritated when Venom suddenly stopped without any apparent reason or warning, but when the assassin went for the door to the courtyard he became absolutely furious. And the man had dared to lecture him about acting like a professional. That was simply unacceptable.

"M64, be my guest," SubZero muttered. HK would probably be relieved if Arlene did, although it was too late for him tonight. "Venom's mine, though, if we come across him again." SubZero had more important things to do than go out of his way for revenge against Venom. He was much more interested in getting to whoever was in charge of this place.
