NIGHTSHIFT 43: RECREATIONAL FIELD

Aug 31, 2009 00:45

[ from here ]Instead of another hallway like he was expecting, Rolo was surprised to find a cool breeze flowing in as soon as he opened the door, gazing out into the darkness that blanketed what looked like to be a field of sorts. The beam of his flashlight didn't go very far, and all Rolo could tell was that this looked vaguely familiar - perhaps ( Read more... )

Now that they were outside, Yousuke quickly scouted the area (two men a ways down, but no one else he could see) then made an abrupt turn to the right, following the wall down to where it met with the one that divided the Rec Field from the Courtyard. Only there, secure in a corner where nothing could sneak up behind them, did he believe it safe to talk. Even then, he kept his voice low.

"Look, this place... it doesn't always pull people from the same time, even if they're from the same place. Naoto and Kanji don't remember anything after November. Well, the first couple days of December in Kanji's case." He swallowed. "And I... I had to tell them I didn't remember any more than that either... even though I'm from the same time as you."

This was... rather odd. Yousuke was acting like there was some incredible secret that he had to share, and so Souji followed along, blank-faced and baffled. In a corner, outside, with no one nearby, and well-nigh whispering? Souji couldn't say that he'd ever encountered this sort of thing before, especially not from Yousuke.

But then he explained, and Souji's eyes brightened. That made sense. If the other people didn't know, then there would be no reason to tell them... indeed, without understanding the context and the circumstances, then even Souji might second-guess himself. But leave it to Yousuke to remember something like that. He nodded quietly, then returned in that same low tone, "Hey, it's all right. I remember everything."

It was comforting to hear Souji say that, very comforting, except that he still hadn't told him everything. They couldn't go anywhere until his best friend was aware of the real danger. "There's something else." Yousuke closed his eyes for a moment. He could only blame himself for this. If Souji had run into Adachi first, there was no doubt in his mind that he would have handled things infinitely better.

"Adachi is here. I don't know if you saw him." There were so many people in the Institute and the shifts had been so divided today that he might not have. "Souji, he's... he's from a time earlier than I thought he was and now he knows that I know. He's threatened lives if I tell anyone, but now that you're here..."

What started as a low hum of static noises escalated into a high pitch frequency, such that everyone in the Recreational Field can hear it.

Why are you here? You shouldn't be here. Go back or I'll kill you.

[ooc: not an attack, but a warning. Go here at 2:53 for the actual pitch effect]

Of course Adachi would have figured it out. They had been there, they had done it, and there were no other explanations... it was a pity that Yousuke had been forced to deal with it. But Adachi was a reasonable person, they could just work it out...

...but then he stopped and thought about it, really thought about it. Adachi had threatened lives? That wasn't like him at all! Why would it matter what time he was from, when it came to something like that?

Unfortunately, before they could clear matters, that hum hit Souji's mind like a physical blow, bringing back his headache like there was no tomorrow. It was in his head, why were so many things hitting him there!? "What is that?" The question of going forward or retreating, or for that matter, continuing their conversation, depended on whether they could find out what was going on.

Yousuke's hands went to his ears, but that didn't stop anything. The voice wasn't a normal one. For lack of better comparisons, the teen could only think of telepathy, or the voice of his Persona. Whatever it was, it had come at an incredibly bad time. He should have expected not to be able to have an easy conversation anywhere outside of his room.

"Dammit! This just figures." The whole threat of death thing had him wanting to scurry back the way they'd came, but wouldn't it be closer just to escape into the next yard?

"Look, if I give you a boost up over the wall, can you help pull me up from the top of it?" Yousuke didn't even wait for his friend to respond before placing his back to the wall and cupping his hands in front of him. They could make use of the main wall of the building from this position as well.

Yeah... Souji was of a like mind there. There was no point at all in staying there when there was some kind of unidentified threat, especially when they didn't have the kind of weaponry they needed to meet any kind of threat. That meant their only option was retreat, and Yousuke's plan was as good as anything.

So he nodded quietly, then took a short run and used Yousuke's hand as a foothold, vaulting up onto the wall. Thank goodness he had been in the basketball team, right? Though Kou would never have imagined layups would be a life-saving technique... regardless, Souji landed safely on the wall, then immediately turned around and offered his hand to Yousuke. He didn't say a word, of course; the quiet determination on his face should show that he'd get Yousuke safely over. Even though Souji's headache was still making him see double...

Scrambling a bit, Yousuke wondered belatedly if he shouldn't have left this part to Souji. He was the more coordinated one. It took some effort, and a lot of grabbing for very poor footholds on both walls in the corner, but at last he was up beside his best friend. He gave a weary thumbs up, panting, before hopping on over into the other yard.
