Spending all of brunch talking to a "Vulcan" and pretending he was just as much of a hardcore fanboy as Spock was one way to start a day

There was nothing like going out for a run after having a big lunch, Akihiko thought to himself as he jogged out the door to the Rec Field. If nothing else, it would serve to burn off a lot of his nervous energy. Something was off about the way the team was right then, and while he didn't know what, sitting around worrying about it wasn't his style in the least. The worrying was really better suited to Mitsuru, as much as he hated to push that on her.
He stretched out his hamstrings against the wall that separated the field from the courtyard, then stood straight, shaking the tension out of his arms and beginning to run along the perimeter.
While Sora had been enjoying his talk with Venom, he had been more than eager to get moving somewhere else once the announcement was made. The computer voice coming from the intercom was still weirding him out, but at least it looked like he was going to go one more week without having to meet an old friend who didn't even know who he really was anymore
( ... )
Akihiko turned, smiling when he saw the boy come up to him. He looked familiar - he didn't think he'd met him before, but he was pretty sure that he'd seen him around a few times. You got to know faces after a while in a place like this. "Sure. I'm Akihiko, by the way," he said, with a grin. "Man, it feels good to get some sunshine after all that craziness last night, don't you think?"
He didn't really wait for the answer - it was one of those things where you could talk just as well while you were running. That bandage on the boy's neck worried him, but...that was part of it, too. When did I get so used to brushing stuff off like that?
Sora was always happy when people introduced themselves right off the bat like that. It usually meant that they were open, friendly people, which also meant that there was a good chance of them getting along. Then again, he always went into conversations expecting that he could make friends with whoever he was talking to.
"Nice to meet you, Akihiko!" he returned as he ran alongside the other boy. "I'm Sora! And yeah, it's nice to be outside, but it's also kind of worrying, isn't it?" As they continued to jog along, his gaze moved down to the soft grass they were running on. It wasn't that hard to imagine dead hands breaking up through the soil here now that he had seen that sort of thing with his own eyes.
"Good to meet you, too, Sora," he replied, nodding a greeting. It took him a minute, though, to get why it would all be so worrying - he hadn't realized he'd pushed the worry from last night down quite that far. It was really hard not to imagine the carnage from last night repeating itself here, with bodies pouring over the walls and coming up from the ground.
"Yeah, it is," Akihiko answered, after that moment's pause. He'd honestly thought that not much could surprise him anymore after the Dark Hour, but last night had proved that fact all too wrong. "I hope that it doesn't happen again tonight. I'd be worried if it did, since it affected pretty much everyone."
He thought back to that morning again, and frowned, just a little more worried about his teammates now. They needed to all have a meeting at some point, he thought.
It wasn't that surprising to hear that Akihiko was also worried about whether or not there would be a repeat of last night. Sora remembered the time when the buses hadn't made it back to the institute on time and everyone had been forced to break their way out of them to get away from the transformed nurses -- the following Sunday everyone had worried, but in the end it had all gone normally. This time, though, things had been even worse...
Mr. Landel probably just liked to keep them on their toes. That's what it felt like, anyway.
"Yeah, hopefully it won't. I don't think so, since... it seems like maybe that wasn't supposed to happen in the first place. I mean, it kinda blows their cover if the townspeople suddenly change like that, right? And then Mr. Landel isn't here today..." Sora found himself taking deeper breaths as they continued to run. It got more and more difficult to talk while jogging as he exerted himself more, but this was certainly good practice, not to mention well overdue.
It was even getting a little hard for Akihiko to talk while running, so he slowed down his pace, then stopped once the two of them rounded the corner. He really had to get back on a regular training schedule, despite all of the nurses' insistence against it - this whole 'getting out of breath while working out' thing was not a change he liked, nor was it one he wanted to stick around. You couldn't fight if you were too weak, and it almost seemed like their idea...wait. Was that the idea, to make them all too weak to fight anymore? If so, then that was it - the only thing to do would be to fight against that, too.
"I'm used to weird things happening at night," he said, "because it happened a lot at home. But it never got as bad as it was last night." He raised an eyebrow at that next part. He'd heard about the nurses changing, and that seemed to be perfectly intentional. "Though that's interesting," he added, humming thoughtfully.
"You don't think the Head Doc got himself wrapped up in that mess last night, do you?"
Sora was glad when Akihiko decided it was time for them to take a break. He kind of needed one, but he hadn't felt comfortable suggesting it to the other boy himself. At the same time, though, he hoped that Akihiko wasn't just stopping for his sake or anything like that. When Sora noticed that Akihiko was also breathing pretty hard, though, he decided that it was probably okay
( ... )
"It's possible, and as bad as this is to say, well, after everything he's put people through, I can't say I'm not wishing that he got a taste of his own medicine," Akihiko admitted. He felt almost guilty right after the words were out of his mouth, though. "Not that I'd normally want bad stuff to happen to people, because that kind of thing usually comes back to bite you," he added. "But, well...this place. I never thought I would've been wishing for the Dark Hour, but at least we could plan around that and be prepared for it."
He laughed just a little at that, then paused, his own expression following.
"Yeah, that's what I've heard, Sora. It's hard to imagine that. But the intercom announcements and all are so weird..."
Sora's thoughts on the matter were pretty similar to Akihiko's. He didn't usually wish bad on people, but he had made certain exceptions in the past and he could make further exceptions in this situation. He had a high tolerance for forgiving people's mistakes (he'd been talking with Demyx, hadn't he?), but sometimes people pushed him too far and he couldn't feel for them much anymore. Landel had put them all here, killed some of his friends and caused others to vanish. If the zombies had gotten to him, it was only what he deserved
( ... )
"Right," he said. "Doesn't the head nurse usually take care of that kind of thing when the head doc's out of commission for a while? So it's a little weird that neither of them seem to be around
( ... )
As much as they might wonder about what was going on with the intercom stuff, Sora knew that they weren't going to get anywhere. They would just have to wait and see how things played out, but he personally doubted that the Head Doctor was gone for good or anything like that.
Sora had more or less caught his breath by the time Akihiko started to explain what the Dark Hour was, but he stayed in place out of politeness as the other boy spoke. He was able to follow along well enough until Akihiko basically implied that there was actually a whole hour in the space of what should have been one minute. How did that even work? Still, time made even less sense here...
"So, you're one of the people who can see it?" he asked, since there probably wasn't any other way that Akihiko could know about it. "I mean, do the people who sleep through it not know about it?" That had to be pretty weird for those few people who did know about it, like being privy to a secret that no one else would even believe them about. Which was kind of like being
