The king couldn't help but wonder; even if they did locate a storage room holding the best equipment for warding off these walking corpses (which he seriously doubted), von Karma didn't honestly expect Scar to fight these things, now did he? Hmmm. The layout of the second story of this building was indeed as similar to the lower level as it appeared on the maps. At least, had he not just climbed an entire flight of stairs (nor had the aching limbs as evidence of that), he would have been immediately unable to tell the difference between this hallway and the one just below them that was now most likely full of those wretched goons.

Hopefully, the stairs would slow their progress, giving him and Mr. Scar enough time to get the hell away from them and to arm themselves properly against them. From what he could tell, that tactic was working, at least for the moment; neither the foul stench nor the chilling utterances were much closer by now than they had been as soon as he left the stairwell.

The stairs seemed to delay those creatures in their pursuit, but Scar figured they'd reach the top of the stairs eventually. He knew little of those things, but he didn't need to only to realize they were rather persistent.

He wondered if these corpses had anything to do with the absence of other patients. von Karma had been the only one he had seen thus far, which was strange. But now was not the time to think about such things, was it? They would need to find safety first.
