Nightshift 42: Sheriff's Office

[from here]"There's gotta be something here you can use..." Yousuke was a little proud of himself for having thought of this, even though it was possible they wouldn't find anything. It would also be less crowded here, at least for the time being. If they could take care of the zombies here and around it they might be able to hold up in there for ( Read more... )

((From here.))

Well... this was... worrisome. Xigbar could hear sounds coming from the sheriff's office, and normally he'd be up for a tussle, but without some weaponry of his own... yeah, not looking forward to it. Especially not when he had a dude with him who was clearly the worst for wear.

That was why the Nobody stopped right outside the door, peering in through the windows with a frown. "Huh... looks like things are just as happening in there as out here. That's no good."

Oof. He hadn't run for any extended period of time in this body yet... it didn't have the stamina of his old one. Probably in part to how badly Max had treated it before he'd been transplanted into it. His lungs were burning and he was shivering, thanks to the constant waves of adrenaline his body kept sending him. One of the creatures back there had come close enough to scratch his face ( ... )

Xigbar kept looking through the windows, holding off for a second. There was some gunfire- and how his fingers itched for that weaponry!- and then the zombie guards went silent. Perfect, so far as Xigbar was concerned. That meant that the inside was clear, and the outside was only going to hurt them if they stayed out.

...what he really wanted to know, though, was why the zombies went after ZEX and not after himself. Or at least, they only went after the Nobody as an incidental thing, on the way to ZEX or if they were interrupted by him or something. Seemed awful fishy to him, and the scientist part of him wanted to know why. Was it because he didn't have a beating heart? Were they like Heartless and sniffed dudes out because of their emotions? Or was there just plain more meat on ZEX's bones and that's why they were trying to nibble on him?

Regardless, the only person who'd get to nibble on ZEX was Xigbar and Zelnick and possibly a wide list of creatures, so he abruptly grabbed ZEX into a hug and grinned at him. "Safe? Comin' ( ... )

ZEX was too busy trying to keep his skin in one piece to pay much attention to his surroundings, and staying away from the creature's teeth was getting increasingly difficult. Particularly since they kept increasing in number, which was not good. Too many things grabbing at him- if only he had a proper weapon! That would certainly turn the tide; he doubted even these creatures could withstand a laser shot to the head-

ZEX was too startled to say much of anything when Xigbar grabbed him, instead making a kind of stuttering gasp, and then things shifted in a way that felt reminiscient of jumping into Hyperspace. He certainly hadn't expected anything like that, and he clung onto Xigbar for dear life.

A few moments of quick breathing when it was over, and he didn't seem to be dissolving or turning inside out, or experiencing any of the other horrific symptoms he'd heard about when one didn't jump into Hyperspace correctly. He was, however, conveniently in Xigbar's arms, and at the moment he didn't see any reason to leave them ( ... )

Xigbar grinned down at the Admiral, and really, it was next to impossible to tell how much a sudden warping wore Xigbar out. He was used to it, of course, but still, tugging two people together at once was just a tiny bit difficult. Especially since he'd had to stretch a little to get them all the way through the stone and to the other side.

Still, he thought a 'ta-da!' might not have been too far out of line. They were relatively safe here, and other patients would have to deal with any incoming zombies before they got to Xigbar and ZEX. In other words... for the sake of safety? Mission accomplished, for now.

That, and he finally had someone clinging to him and apparently happy to be there, which was just odd enough to make the Nobody beam a little. "Your Captain an' I have been playin' a bit of a game, with him tryin' to figure out what I am. Like I told you, I'm no human... somethin' like that is easy as pie for me."
